A recent study has suggested that psychedelics may deliver their antidepressive effects by “shaking up” the brain networks responsible for regulating emotion. Last year was a major year for Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers. Generous subsidies from Beijing allowed EV companies from China to flood the international market, particularly Europe, with incredibly cheap electric cars.

Furthermore, Tesla faced incredibly stiff competition from automaker BYD, which ultimately surpassed Tesla in EV sales in the last quarter of 2023 to become the top-selling electric vehicle brand on the globe. Although Tesla’s decade-long head start allowed it to outclass established automakers such as Ford, General Motors and Honda, China-based electric vehicle manufacturers such as BYD have caught up to the Texas-based carmaker and are now giving Tesla a run for its money.

China’s electric vehicle industry is quite new, but Chinese EV companies are putting significant pressure on established carmakers in Europe, thanks to their affordable EV offerings. There has been such a major influx of Chinese electric cars into Europe that European Union leaders launched a probe into heavily subsidized EVs from China because they were pricing local automakers out of the EU market. In the United States, several automakers are scaling back their electrification plans after pouring billions of dollars into EV development but still failing to catch up to Tesla.

While American and European carmakers have struggled to make their mark on the nascent electric vehicle industry, Chinese automakers are rapidly expanding outside the country and capturing foreign markets. Even though these companies are significantly reliant on government subsidies to reduce their prices, their potential on the global stage should not be discounted.

Alongside BYD, several other Chinese automakers plan to outcompete European and American automakers in the European market by offering cheaper electric vehicles. These companies may even be able to access the North American market despite political tensions between China and the U.S. BYD buses have been operating in certain regions in the U.S. and Mexico for several years now, and several BYD passenger electric cars are already available in Mexico.

China’s swiftly growing electric-vehicle sector also threatens Europe’s and America’s auto-export industries. America earns around $55 billion from car and truck exports while the European Union car export market is worth a whopping $174 billion.

As electric vehicles become more prevalent in the truck and passenger-vehicle segments, and China’s growth in these sectors continues to grow, China could steadily reduce the value of vehicle exports from the West, particularly in emerging markets with a need for cheaper electric cars.

Ford CEO Jim Farley noted in 2023 that the company sees Chinese automakers, not established giants such as Toyota or General Motors, as their top competitors.

The federal government has released documents confirming that the U.S. Health and Human Services has recommended that the DEA categorize marijuana under Schedule III. Currently, the Controlled Substances Act classifies marijuana as a Schedule I substance, which means it has a high potential for abuse and has no accepted medical use.

Health officials explained that marijuana had a lower potential for abuse in comparison to other substances under Schedule I or II and was already accepted for medical use in America. In their review, the health officials stated that more than 30,000 healthcare professionals across various jurisdictions in the U.S. were allowed to recommend the medical use of cannabis for more than six million eligible patients for roughly 15 medical conditions.

The majority of the documents debate the federal government’s analysis for drug scheduling, calling attention to the importance of cannabis’ abuse potential in comparison to other substances, its risk of physical dependence, its relative safety and whether it has been accepted for medical use.

The review also examined if available scientific literature supported the medical use of marijuana, with federal health officials acknowledging that many states in the country had legalized the medical use of cannabis. They also noted that some medical marijuana programs had been around for a couple of years.

With regard to effectiveness, the memo stated that the biggest evidence for efficacy existed for cannabis use within pain indications, particularly neuropathic pain.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also carried out a review noting that it didn’t find support for cannabis providing benefit for anxiety or epilepsy. The review did, however, determine that there was a risk linked to treating post-traumatic stress disorder with cannabis. The agency also highlighted that, in general, there was inadequate quality clinical data supporting the use of cannabis for post-traumatic stress disorder.

In the matter of marijuana’s safety in comparison to other drugs, the review argued that the risks to public heath posed by cannabis were low in comparison to other abused drugs, including benzodiazepines, cocaine and heroin. The review called attention to the fact that cannabis ranked the lowest for overdose deaths, as compared to other substances. The released documents also revealed that the National Institute on Drug Abuse supported the agency’s review.

It is important to note that even if the DEA accepted the health department’s recommendation to reschedule cannabis, the drug would still not be legal under federal law. However, its rescheduling would allow state-legal marijuana businesses to claim federal tax deductions. At the moment, these businesses aren’t permitted to do so because of Section 280E of the Internal Revenue Service code.

Entities in the industry, such as Aurora Cannabis Inc. (NASDAQ: ACB) (TSX: ACB), will be hoping that the rescheduling of cannabis at the federal level paves the way for further regulatory reforms as the years go by.

During the company’s investor summit in August 2023, Prospera CEO Samuel David provided more information regarding this three-phase strategy:

Phase I

Prospera completed the first phase of its restructuring by optimizing operations at its existing assets and addressing legacy arrears and non-compliance issues.

At the beginning of this transformation, the company was producing just 80 barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) per day. In Q4 of last year, Prospera peaked at nearly 1,200 BOE per day. Its breakeven is around 500 barrels per day, illustrating the opportunity for free cash flow. This prospect has driven Prospera’s capital development and optimization in recent quarters.

After a temporary slowdown in production due to harsh winter conditions, Prospera is currently producing about 800 BOE per day and anticipates an additional 300-500 barrels of daily production following the completion of ongoing site maintenance work.

This sustained increase has pushed the company’s NPV from roughly $3 million prior to the restructuring efforts to approximately $72 million today.

In an effort to build on this progress and maximize its available resources, Prospera piloted two horizontal reentries to assess a potential horizontal well transformation at its properties.

Phase II

Following up on the optimization efforts of Phase I, Prospera aims to commence a horizontal well transformation at its properties in the coming months. Based on its pilot wells from Phase I, the company has proposed 10 horizontal well locations at its Cuthbert and Heart Hills properties.

Prospera has likewise proposed eight medium light oil direction wells at its Alberta property, and it is exploring strategic acquisitions aimed at expanding its core area and diversifying its product mix.

Other facets of Phase II include piloting an enhanced oil recovery (EOR) application and continuing to execute its liability management goals and ESG initiatives. Prospera has already abandoned 60 vertical wells as part of its three-year LMR plan to reclaim surface land and reduce the environmental footprint of its operations.

Phase III

Beginning next year, Phase III of Prospera’s corporate redevelopment strategy will focus on continuing the company’s horizontal modular development to appreciate production and optimize recovery of remaining reserves. Prospera intends to implement full-scale EOR applications based on the results of its Phase II pilot program, which is forecast to optimize recovery by greater than 10%.

Prospera also intends to continue its acquisition strategy to diversify its product mix. Its goal, as detailed by in August 2023 investor summit, is to attain 50% light oil, 40% heavy oil and 10% gas – all while continuing to eliminate carbon emissions as part of its existing ESG initiatives.

Poised for Growth

Following its transformational efforts in 2022, Prospera is poised to achieve record growth in 2023. The company has forecast significant reductions in production costs through 2024, alongside sizable increases in daily production.

Prospera is currently exploring strategic acquisition targets to potentially increase its production beyond 5,000 BPD while expanding its reserve base to a billion barrels.

Market Opportunity

While the oil and gas industry faces long-term geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainty, there is a clear trend to secure supply in the short term. According to Deloitte, the global upstream industry ended 2022 with some of the highest free cash flows on record, driving reinvestment in hydrocarbons and overall investment in clean energy.

The Energy Information Administration recently forecast a dip in global oil inventories over each of the next five quarters, placing upward pressure on oil prices. A qualified person has not done sufficient work to classify it as a current mineral resource, and Arizona Metals is not treating the historic estimate as a current mineral resource.

The company also owns 100% of the Sugarloaf Peak Property in La Paz County, which is located on 4,400 acres of BLM claims.
