A lawsuit filed against the state of Mississippi by a medical cannabis dispensary owner has been dismissed. The lawsuit challenged Mississippi’s laws, which the plaintiff said placed restrictions on marijuana businesses by forbidding them from placing advertisements on a majority of media platforms.

In a decision issues last week, Federal District Judge Michael P. Mills agreed with the state’s stance that such operations do not benefit from the constitutional protections afforded to certain types of commercial speech because marijuana possession is still prohibited under federal law.

Clarence Cocroft II, the plaintiff, founded Tru Source Medical Cannabis in 2022 following Mississippi’s legalization of medical cannabis use for patients with life-threatening illnesses. However, he claims that because the state forbids medical cannabis companies from running advertisements in any medium, he has had difficulty attracting consumers.

Cocroft, who was represented by the Institute for Justice, a nonprofit libertarian law firm, filed a lawsuit against Mississippi’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Bureau and the state’s Health and Revenue Departments. His claims revolve around the purported infringement of his advertising rights, stating that the limitations imposed by the state prohibit him from running advertisements in periodicals, newspapers, radio, television and billboards.

In his decision, Judge Mills stated that he believed it would be a major violation of state sovereignty to remove Mississippi’s prohibitions on marijuana advertising. He stressed that the state’s legislature had outdone the U.S. Congress by legalizing cannabis to some degree. This, in Mills’ opinion, called into question the jurisdiction of a federal court to tell the Mississippi legislature how far it may take cannabis legalization.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the ruling, Cocroft maintained that Mississippi’s rules violate businesses’ First Amendment rights. He stated that he plans to file an appeal with the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals over the ruling. While the state can’t restrict dispensaries from displaying signs on their premises or showcasing products on their websites, Cocroft’s attorneys maintain that the broader advertising restrictions imposed by the health department are unconstitutional.

Marijuana is still classified as a restricted substance under federal law, even though President Joe Biden has pardoned thousands of individuals who were found guilty of using cannabis and of simple possession on federal property. Mills emphasized that states have the right to control marijuana advertising as long as it is still illegal on a federal level, bolstering Mississippi’s jurisdiction to regulate how the substance is advertised.

This lawsuit filed in Mississippi highlights some of the challenges that cannabis enterprises, including major actors such as Cronos Group Inc. Researchers from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) have found that coal may have applications in the electronics industry. NETL researchers have discovered a way of using coal in the semiconductor supply chain that could open the door to an era of 2D materials semiconductors. The research team created ultrathin insulating films using coal that have shown significant potential as an insulating material for 2D semiconductors.

Silicon semiconductors have been used to build transistors for electronic devices for well over half a century. As the world’s demand for smaller and more powerful semiconductors has increased, so has the range of materials that could potentially serve as transistor substrates.

Scientists have spent the past several years studying silicon semiconductor alternatives including 2D (flat) materials such as molybdenum disulfide and graphene.

One of the research firms involved in the NETL study set out to develop alternative advanced and high-value uses for the polluting fuel. With most of the world looking to replace coal with cleaner alternatives, the researchers may have stumbled onto an application that could simultaneously advance the semiconductor sector and give coal alternative uses in the development of transistors.

Transistors are critical electric components that serve as building blocks in computer processors by carrying out fundamental calculations. They are made of semiconductors and an insulating material to prevent interference. Suppliers are finding it increasingly hard to source enough silicon to keep the supply chain going even as advances in computation call for more and more computational power, requiring more advanced semiconductors.

Moore’s Law states that the number of transistors on an integrated circuit will increase by two times every year with minimal cost increases. However, Qing Cao, the study coauthor and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign professor of materials science, notes that Moore’s Law is slowing down alongside a significantly higher demand for computational power due to emerging applications such as machine learning.

2D semiconductors may be able to bridge the gap and allow suppliers to develop semiconductors that are powerful enough to output the computational power needed by applications such as artificial intelligence (AI). They are called 2D because they are incredibly flat. Graphene, for instance, is so thin that one sheet could just be one atom thick, allowing for a significantly reduced length as well.

Using coal to create thin, insulating filaments for 2D semiconductors such as graphene and molybdenum disulfide “drastically improved performance,” the researchers reported. According to study coauthor and senior NETL senior scientist Congjun Wang, the fossil fuel is a good starting material because it has a rich nanostructure that makes it easier to convert coal into an insulator.

The fuel’s abundance in the United States also means that the country could have a relatively cost-effective means of fortifying its supply chain.

It isn’t clear whether this newly discovered potential use of coal would be able to utilize all the coal that leading extraction companies such as Arch Resources Inc. (NYSE: ARCH) have been producing.

A recent influx in psychedelic-related research has revealed that some classic psychedelic drugs have the potential to offer long-term relief against several mental disorders. The expanding scientific literature states that psychedelics such as LSD, psilocybin (magic mushrooms) and ayahuasca may be able to treat debilitating mental disorders, including treatment-resistant depression, eating disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

As a result, there have been growing calls to legalize therapeutic psychedelic use to provide mental-health patients with access to safer and more effective alternative treatments. However, regulatory roadblocks at the state and federal levels could frustrate efforts to legalize psychedelics for therapeutic use.

Even if state lawmakers choose to legalize therapeutic psychedelic use, federal guidelines that classify hallucinogenic drugs as Schedule I substances having no accepted medical use may add additional barriers.

Marks also said that while psychedelics have shown promise in PTSD, addiction and depression treatments, scientists still don’t understand the underlying mechanisms that grant psychedelics their therapeutic properties. Federal agencies can go after states that choose to regulate Schedule I controlled substances such as cannabis and psychedelics. Although those agencies haven’t intervened in recent years as the country’s state-level cannabis sector has expanded, they may intervene soon if states begin to legalize psychedelics en masse.

Mendola notes that reduced capital will decrease the odds of company growth through mergers and acquisitions or by obtaining more licenses, forcing MSOs to turn their focus to wholesale. He adds that with many vertically integrated cannabis businesses in states such as New York, Massachusetts and Illinois reaching or nearly reaching their total number of retail licenses, wholesale will take higher priority.

The cannabis executive predicted that the “vast majority” of the MSOs in America’s state-level cannabis sector are focusing on organic growth. This growth will likely come from the wholesale division, Mendola said, especially in markets that still haven’t transitioned from medical marijuana to recreational cannabis. However, MSOs will have to overcome challenges such as low cannabis prices to grow their wholesale divisions.

Mendola notes that in Ayr’s case, a double-digit increase in wholesale sales volumes in 2023 was significantly undermined by a double-digit reduction in wholesale prices. Although the company saw notable growth through the end of the year, Mendola says price compression masked a lot of this growth. Limited vertical integration among the newest entrants into the cannabis retail market could help stabilize wholesale cannabis prices as these retailers will need wholesale partners to supply products regularly, Mendola says.

Curaleaf Holdings Inc. Eloro commissioned a NI 43-101 Technical Report on Iska Iska, which was completed by Micon International Limited and is available on Eloro’s website and under its filings on SEDAR.

A fully financed drill program is currently underway on the property, situated near world-class deposits including Silver Sand, San Bartolomé, Pulacayo, San Cristobal, San Vicente, Chorolque, Tasna, Choroma and Siete Suyos. Iska Iska is in the southwest part of the Eastern Cordillera, which hosts a number of major polymetallic mines and mineral deposits. Drilling and continuous channel sampling results have demonstrated some very high metal values, especially silver and tin, within an immense system, where mineralization has been encountered in every drill hole to date. The company believes there is excellent potential for world-class bulk mineable deposits.

  • Progressive Care Inc. – In August 2022, NextPlat completed a strategic $7 million investment in Progressive Care Inc. (OTCQB: RXMD), a personalized health care services and technology company. In a news release announcing the investment, NextPlat CEO Charles M. Fernandez noted that the company is “committed to harnessing the power of digital technologies to capitalize on the ongoing digital transformation of Progressive Care and the entire health care industry.” NextPlat intends to accelerate Progressive Care’s digital health care transformation with the launch of a new e-commerce platform for health care products later this year.
  • NextPlat NFT Platform – Building on its existing e-commerce initiatives, NextPlat is working to bridge the gap between tangible and digital e-commerce marketplaces by incorporating burgeoning Web3 technologies. Market Opportunity

The rapid growth of e-commerce over the last decade is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. According to data published by Forbes, roughly 20.8% of all retail purchases are expected to take place online in 2023, accounting for total sales of $6.31 trillion worldwide. It total, e-commerce sales are expected to grow by 10.4% YoY in 2023, accounting for a whopping 24% of all retail purchases by 2026.

The health care portion of the e-commerce market is generating particularly bullish forecasts, bolstered by the continued adoption of the 340B Drug Pricing Program in the U.S., which requires most drug manufacturers to provide outpatient drugs to covered entities at significantly reduced prices. Industry reports suggest that the global health care e-commerce market will expand at a compound annual growth rate of 16.8% from 2022 to 2030, climbing to a value of more than $1.37 trillion by the end of the forecast period.
