New research has discovered that individuals who use CBD for crack-use disorder may have fewer adverse health events as well as better health outcomes. This is in comparison to patients who were on conventional treatments.

However, they observed that the side effects presented in the CBD group were far gentler than those observed in individuals who were on pharmaceutical therapies. Additionally, the researchers observed no differences between both groups with regard to self-reported crack cravings.

Participants who received CBD treatment also had fewer episodes of constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, nausea, low concentration, ataxia, nasal congestion and memory impairment. The researchers noted that fewer side effects from CBD meant that participants were more likely to continue their treatment. They explained that side effects from conventional treatments were so uncomfortable that they contributed to poor adherence to treatment of individuals with crack use disorder.

A total of 25 individuals completed the study, 10 of whom were in the control group. In their conclusion, the researchers stated that CBD was a tolerable and safe product that alleviated the primary symptoms reported by participants, which included challenges reducing use of crack, lack of appetite and poor health.

The researchers involved in the new study represent official and academic institutions in Brazil, including the Federal University of São Paulo, the Federal District’s secretary of health and forensic institute, and a range of departments at the University of Brasília.

For future studies, the researchers plan to increase their sample sizes in similar trials and also screen and monitor participants more rigorously. This is after 90 of the individuals who were eligible for this trial failed to conclude the full protocol. Additionally, they plan to improve emotional regulation, reduce environmental factors as well as stress and use other cannabinoid options. The research’s findings were reported in the “International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction.

Last week, the price of gold held steady with increasing geopolitical risks continuing to prop its prices up. This is despite the fact that the Fed also signaled a potential delay in a reduction in rates of interest.

These taxes are intentionally higher compared to taxes on other commodities.

The rationale behind aggressive taxation of such goods lies in the recognition that their usage imposes societal burdens such as increased healthcare costs and violence, termed as “negative externalities” by economists. Research has indicated potential health risks associated with cannabis, particularly among adolescents. Consequently, governments frequently structure cannabis taxes in a manner aimed at curbing its use.

Most states that have legalized cannabis implement a sales tax specific to marijuana. Some use weighted or quantity-based taxation techniques in addition to sales taxes. For example, a set of six cannabis brownies weighing a pound might be taxed based on their quantity or weight. Similar to the taxation of alcoholic beverages in many states, potency-based taxation is also utilized to regulate cannabis consumption. Spirits have significantly higher taxes than beer and wine. Similarly, cannabis can be taxed based on the level of THC.

Washington and Colorado became the first states to legalize cannabis for recreational use in 2012, with sales beginning in 2014. The states adopted an aggressive approach to cannabis taxation compared to others. Colorado, for instance, levies a marijuana sales tax of 15% for consumers and an additional 15% tax based on weight for retailers, in contrast to New Mexico’s 12% sales tax. Washington imposes an even higher tax rate of 37%.

Washington and Colorado anticipated substantial tax revenues from their burgeoning cannabis industries due to the high tax rates imposed. However, these predictions were based on estimates of illegal cannabis usage, leading to an overestimation of legal consumption, which is typically more expensive than illicit drugs.

Former Colorado governor John Hickenlooper predicted that cannabis taxes would bring in more than $130 million during the first year of sales in 2014. However, the actual revenue fell short, amounting to approximately $88 million. Washington faced a similar situation, with tax revenue significantly below projections. Furthermore, both states experienced a decline in tax revenue from tobacco and alcohol products, attributed to a shift in consumer preferences toward marijuana consumption. This led to a reduction in revenue from these sin goods, although overall tax revenue increased postlegalization, albeit not to the extent anticipated by policymakers.

Additionally, states such as Colorado, California and Oregon have witnessed a slowdown or decline in cannabis sales and revenue due to market maturation, leading to a drop in average cannabis prices and subsequent reductions in tax revenues.

Potency-based taxation appears resistant to falling prices, assuming consistent cannabis sales volumes. However, its effectiveness hinges on consumer preferences for products with high potency, which may not align with market realities. Moreover, suppliers could manipulate THC potency to avoid taxes, potentially leading to unintended consequences such as the proliferation of low-potency products.

Ultimately, there is no one-size-fits-all tax structure capable of guaranteeing a steady stream of cannabis tax revenue. While they have an impact on market dynamics, tax laws are not able to completely counteract demand swings. State tax collections are likely to continue declining or at least remain stagnant as the cannabis industry matures and becomes more competitive as additional states legalize its use.

The high-grade Storm Copper Deposit is located 112 kilometers south of the community of Resolute Bay, Nunavut, on western Somerset Island, just south of the past-producing Polaris Pb-Zn Mine. The property comprises 173 contiguous mining claims, including the Storm Copper and Seal Zinc projects, covering an area of approximately 541,795 acres.

The property has good access to established shipping lanes, and the landscape provides favorable conditions for development of roads and a protected deep-water port. Exploration is supported through excellent infrastructure in the nearby hamlet of Resolute Bay.

Aston Bay is partnered with American West Metals (ASX: AW1) at Storm. American West is responsible for all exploration expenditures, having aggressively advanced the project toward production and earned an 80% interest. This affords excellent optionality to the company’s shareholders, as Aston Bay is free carried with no required expenditures until the completion of a bankable feasibility study.

American West recently completed an Australian JORC-compliant Maiden Resource Estimate for Storm; the North American 43-101 compliant resource estimate is expected in Q1 2024. American West is cashed up and plans a multimillion-dollar resource expansion and new discovery drilling program for the summer of 2024.

The Buckingham County Gold Project

The gold-bearing system at the Buckingham County Gold Project in Virginia lies within a belt hosting past producing mines, current gold mines and advanced gold explorations, stretching through Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.

Buckingham hosts a “Kirkland Lake-style” high grade gold vein returning values consistently over one ounce gold per ton and is underexplored both at depth and along almost one mile of strike length. These types of veins have excellent ESG qualities, as they are typically mined using a small footprint underground method, with gold extracted using simple and environmentally friendly gravity methods.

Market Opportunity

The World Gold Council, the industry association for the world’s gold producers, estimated in 2023 the physical financial gold market, which is made up of bars, coins, gold ETFs and central bank reserves, is worth nearly $5 trillion. The council reports that gold mine production adds approximately 3,500 tons of the precious metal to the world’s supply annually, equivalent to about 2% growth.

This historical scarcity and relatively slow production of new supply, as compared to other commodities, is a primary reason gold has retained its value for millennia, according to the council.

A report from Acumen Research and Consulting, a global provider of market intelligence and consulting services, valued the global copper market at $304.1 billion in 2022 and forecast that it will reach a market size of $496.8 billion by 2032, growing at a CAGR of 5.1% over the forecast period.

The report identifies a growing demand for copper in the electronics industry, as well as an expanding copper supply due to increasing production from existing mines and the rising number of mine development projects in developing nations, as driving factors in the rising value of the copper market.

Management Team

Thomas Ullrich is CEO and Director of Aston Bay. He has over 30 years of experience in mineral exploration and geoscience. Before joining Aston Bay, he was Chief Geologist North America for Antofagasta Minerals plc, investigating copper potential through extensive property evaluations and management of drill programs in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Prior to that, he was Senior Geologist for Almaden Minerals.

Sofia Harquail handles Investor Relations and Corporate Development at Aston Bay. She has over 15 years of experience in the private and public sectors of the mining industry. Before joining Aston Bay, she worked as a consultant for the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada and for exempt market dealer Red Cloud Financial Services Inc. The solver outperformed four purely classical methods on problem sizes at commercial scale (N=3,000). In a separate project, similar inputs were tested using a leading ion trap system, which failed to find any commercial solution.
  • Life Sciences – Menten AI makes use of D-Wave quantum computing to assist in the design of novel therapeutic peptides—short strings of amino acids that can act as potent drugs. With the rise of COVID-19, D-Wave’s Advantage system made it possible to identify molecules that might be especially well-suited for binding and inhibiting the related spike protein, producing several promising peptide designs.
  • Finance – Multiverse Computing, a leader in developing quantum solutions for the financial sector, leveraged D-Wave’s hybrid solver service in a collaboration with BBVA, one of the world’s largest financial institutions. Multiverse demonstrated management strategies that far exceeded the granularity of traditional returns in a fraction of the time, helping BBVA identify a low-risk portfolio for investment.
