But recently, both Musk and Tesla have taken a different stance. They are now in favor of keeping the tax credits. So, what’s behind this shift?

Financial Pressure on Tesla

Tesla has hit a rough patch. In 2024, the company experienced a decline in yearly vehicle sales for the first time. During the first quarter alone, sales dropped so sharply that Tesla’s profit shrank by 71%. This marked one of its worst financial quarters ever.

Even though the tax credit goes to buyers and not directly to Tesla, it still helps the company. The credit lowers the final cost of a Tesla car, making it more affordable and appealing. Back in 2019, when Tesla lost access to the earlier version of the tax credit, the company had to cut car prices to maintain sales.

Now, with fewer Americans buying EVs, Tesla is under pressure and could really benefit from the support these credits offer.

A Fight Over Policy

Musk’s change of heart also relates to a recent government legislation dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill.” This bill suggests removing EV tax incentives while keeping subsidies for fossil fuel companies. Musk has spoken out strongly against this, calling it unfair and biased.

This disagreement has caused tension between Musk and President Donald Trump. The two were previously seen as allies, but that relationship seems to have cooled. Trump expressed confusion over Musk’s new position and blamed it on the bill’s cuts to EV support. Musk responded by criticizing the bill’s spending and calling it wasteful, especially since it favors oil and gas industries over clean energy.

Experts Are Rethinking Their Predictions

Market analysts who once believed Tesla would gain an edge without the tax credit are now reconsidering. Texas is on the verge of banning a wide range of THC-infused items like vapes, edibles, and beverages. A newly approved bill by state lawmakers is now in the hands of Governor Greg Abbott, who will decide whether to sign it into law.

Relevant authorities argue that oil field theft has been ongoing for years, increasing as the border crisis intensified during the Biden administration. They also posit that losses have surged as cartel operatives continue to steal to facilitate their illicit businesses.

HB 48 establishes a unit focused on preventing oilfield theft that will operate within a region spanning 36 counties in the state. SB 1806 grants state troopers under the public safety department the authority to inspect any cargo tank suspected of or used to transport stolen petroleum products on a railroad or public road.

This measure also changes the Water Code rules for how gas and oil waste is disposed of.

On the other hand, SB 494 creates a task force to prevent the theft of petroleum products. The measure stipulates that the team will study the theft of these products, examine the impacts of said theft, and give recommendations.

Crypto ETNs have been off-limits to retail investors in the U.K. since 2019 when the FCA imposed a ban due to concerns about the risks they might pose to the average consumer. At the time, the regulator argued that the highly volatile nature of crypto assets could lead to serious financial losses.

Now, the FCA says it’s reconsidering its stance to help grow the U.K.’s digital finance sector. The ban on crypto derivatives, however, will stay in place for now.

David Geale, the FCA’s executive director overseeing digital assets and payment systems, stated that this move reflects the regulator’s intent to boost innovation and competitiveness in the U.K.’s crypto industry. He stated that giving retail investors access to these products allows them to decide whether the high-risk nature of such investments aligns with their financial goals while understanding they could potentially lose all of their money.

Industry players have welcomed the proposal as a positive step forward. Many believe the U.K. has been trailing behind countries like the U.S. and members of the European Union in setting up a strong, supportive framework for cryptocurrency markets.

In the U.S., spot crypto ETFs began rolling out after the SEC greenlit rule changes to permit bitcoin-based funds in early 2024. Meanwhile, the U.K. has been drafting new laws aimed at turning the country into a global leader in digital finance. Priced at just $7,000, the tiny electric vehicle from KG Motors, a startup based in Higashihiroshima, Japan, is quickly gaining enough popularity to rival electric offerings from Toyota. Dubbed the ‘Mibot,' the tiny EV is a single-seat vehicle with a top speed of 37 miles per hour and a range of 62 miles. While these specs may seem quite diminutive, most drivers don't purchase tiny electric cars like the Mibot for their performance. Such vehicles typically thrive in urban regions where drivers have small daily commutes and access to a greater density of public charging stations. Asian countries in particular have really taken to tiny electric cars, partly due to the abundance of different tiny EV models in the Asian market. In Japan, the $7,000 Mibot has already been pre-sold to 3,300 drivers who can expect delivery by March 2027. Affordable and practical EVs like the Mibot could be key to jumpstarting electric vehicle adoption in Japan. Their low cost, ease of charging, and suitability for urban environments make them especially attractive in a country known for its dense cities and narrow streets.
