Electric vehicles rely on rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs for energy, allowing the EVs to emit zero carbon at the tailpipe. But while the West has a major position in the global EV industry, with American automaker Tesla being the largest electric vehicle maker in the world, the EV battery game is dominated by Asian players. In fact, the largest seller of batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles is currently a Chinese company called Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd (CATL).

CATL has pretty much dominated the EV battery market for the past few years, selling more batteries for EVs and hybrids than any other company in the first half of 2022 and predicted to remain the top battery seller in the world for the rest of the year. South Korean company KRE Research reports that the Chinese battery maker sold an estimated 70.9 GW hours’ equivalent of batteries over the first six months of 2022, an increase in sales of a whopping 115.6% over the first half of 2021.

CATL was formed in 2011 and quickly secured a spot in the battery space after entering a strategic collaboration agreement with German carmaker BMW. In the decade since it was formed, CATL has entered into joint venture agreements with several Chinese carmakers, including Dongfeng Motor, Geely Auto group, GW Auto Group and  GAC Group. The Chinese battery maker has also partnered with Tesla to supply the Texas-based EV maker with battery components for the EVs built at its Shanghai gigafactory.

South Korean battery-maker LG Energy Solutions is also a major player in the global EV battery game, delivering EV battery parts to companies such as Tesla, Lucid and Porshe. LG Energy Solutions owes a large chunk of its success in the EV battery sector to soaring Tesla Model 3 and Y sales in China and Europe.

The South Korean company, which sold 29.2 GW hours’ equivalent of batteries in the first half of 2022, also holds a stake in Ultium Cells, is a collaborative venture with General Motors that currently develops battery cells for the Cadillac Lyriq and the GMC Hummer EV.

BYD Auto, a Chinese company that produces both EVs and EV batteries, sold 24.0 GW hours’ equivalent of EV batteries, a 200% increase in batteries sold in the first half of 2021. Panasonic has also managed to carve out a chunk of the EV battery market for itself, selling 19.5 GW hours’ equivalent of batteries in the first half of 2022. The Japanese company holds 9.6% market share and is slated to retain its status as a major player in the industry, thanks to its enduring collaboration with Tesla.

The combined EV battery output of LG Energy Solution, CATL and BYD as well as Panasonic was 143.6 GW hours, exceeding  70% of worldwide automotive battery sales in the first six months of the year. SK Innovation, CALB, Samsung SDI, Sunwoda, Guoxuan and Svolt made up 21.2% of the worldwide EV battery market while other battery makers made up the remaining 8.2%.

Energy storage system and EV makers such as Nikola Corporation (NASDAQ: NKLA) have some catching up to do if they are to make a dent in the dominance of the larger players in the battery manufacturing segment.

In April, the DEA announced its intent to place certain hallucinogens in Schedule I, which would make it harder for researchers to conduct studies investigating the therapeutic potential of those substances. This is in addition to criminalizing said substances. However, after scientists from Emory University and Panacea Plant Sciences challenged this action, the agency decided to withdraw the proposal altogether.

In a recently released notice, the agency stated that it would rescind the ban on DOC (2,5-dimethoxy-4-chloroamphetamine) and DOI (2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine) and would instead publish a new proposed rule. The DEA’s justification for the original ban wasn’t backed by sufficient evidence demonstrating that DOC and DOI had a high potential for abuse or that the substances were directly connected to severe adverse health events.

Despite the lack of significant reports of deaths or distressing responses associated with the use of these substances, the agency stated that it was reasonable to assume that the drugs had the capability to be a hazard to the health of users and to the safety of the community, based on anecdotal reports posted by individuals online, which revealed that the substances possessed hallucinogenic properties.

This reversal is a big win for the scientific community, especially since it comes just a month after the agency abandoned a separate plan to reclassify certain tryptamine psychedelics under Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act.

In a statement, Panacea Plant Sciences CEO David Heldreth stated that this move by the DEA was a victory, especially since DOC and DOI were incredible tools for research, as well as for physical and mental health. Heldreth was also involved in the challenge to the proposed ban on the DiPT, 5-MeO-DET, 5-MeO-MiPT, 5-MeO-AMT and 4-OH-DiPT psychedelics that the DEA withdrew in July.

Before the proposed ban was withdrawn, the DEA received significant criticism during the public comment period, with the rule change being opposed heavily and individuals requesting a hearing.

Separately, the agency is being sued over its refusal to permit a physician to use psilocybin therapy to treat terminally ill patients pursuant to state and federal Right-to-Try laws. These laws are focused on increasing access to investigational drugs classified under Schedule I that are yet to be approved for general use. Additionally, the agency is in court over its continual delays in processing requests for public records related to cannabis and psychedelic substances.

The decision to reverse the proposed ban of the two substances gives the psychedelics community and companies such as Delic Holdings Corp. Every year, 6,000 flasks of air arrive at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Global Monitoring Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado. Liquid and solid digestate matter is a byproduct of the RNG production process and is used as fertilizer and in other applications.

EverGen operates three projects in British Columbia. Portfolio Projects

Fraser Valley Biogas is one of three projects in EverGen’s portfolio. Located in Abbotsford, British Columbia, the facility has been digesting manure and off-farm organics since 2011 and was the first agricultural digester in Canada to produce RNG. The RNG generated through this project is part of a FortisBC program to supply renewable gas to homes, businesses and other customers. Fraser Valley Biogas also provides Abbotsford farms with renewable fertilizer via the digestate produced. EverGen acquired Fraser Valley Biogas early in 2021 and is currently enhancing and expanding the facility. These optimization projects resulted in record production during the month of September 2021, supporting the growing demand for RNG in British Columbia. Optimization activities contributed an additional 18% of RNG production for September and a 9% higher year-to-date production compared to the previous year. The facility produces approximately 80,000 gigajoules of RNG, enough to heat more than 1,000 homes for a year.

Net Zero Waste Abbotsford, a wholly owned EverGen subsidiary and portfolio project, is an existing composting and organic processing facility and RNG expansion project. The British Columbia Utilities Commission recently approved a 20-year offtake agreement between the facility and FortisBC, an electricity and gas utility. Under this agreement, FortisBC will purchase up to 173,000 gigajoules of RNG annually for injection into its natural gas system upon completion of an anaerobic digester project at Net Zero Waste Abbotsford. Once construction is complete, this project is expected to produce enough energy to meet the needs of more than 1,900 homes.

Sea to Sky Soils, a wholly owned EverGen subsidiary and portfolio project, is an existing composting and organic processing facility and potential future RNG expansion project which has been operating near Pemberton, British Columbia, on Lil’wat Nation land since 2012. The Lil’wat Nation is a key partner and supporter of the facility, which has employed a majority of its staff from the First Nation since inception. The Sea to Sky Soils facility processed approximately 160 percent of its forecast tonnage in the second half of 2021. In total, Sea to Sky Soils processed approximately 36,000 tons of organic waste in 2021. The facility is working with the Ministry of Environment to expand its operational capacity in 2022. EverGen has partnered with local municipalities – including Metro Vancouver and the municipality of Pemberton – for the delivery of additional organic waste to the facility. The facility is an important part of EverGen’s RNG infrastructure platform and serves as a source of valuable feedstock to support the company’s existing and future operations.

A report from Global Market Insights states that the biogas market is projected to see significant growth over the next few years, driven by a shifting preference to utilize biogas to reduce emission levels from traditional fuels. Escalating RNG usage by gas utilities as a sustainable and low carbon alternative to supply heat and electricity in industries and buildings will further stimulate growth. RNG is increasingly deployed across the transport sector, especially for heavy vehicles and vessels, to abate GHG emissions.

Medical Devices

Odyssey is also developing two medical device candidates:

  • CardioMap® is intended to provide early, non-invasive testing for heart disease. The system offers a number of potential advantages over traditional EKGs, including requiring less training to operate, offering heightened sensitivity and coming in a small and portable form factor. CardioMap is being developed for a 510(k) regulatory pathway, which requires a study to demonstrate equivalence to legacy EKG offerings.

    • Odyssey believes that, once FDA-approved, its anti-choking device will quickly become the “accepted” standard and leader in the treatment of choking incidents globally. Its low-cost manufacturing and convenient portable design give SAL a competitive edge over competing devices utilizing cumbersome masks.

Market Opportunities

Odyssey’s varied development pipeline positions it to address a number of sizable market opportunities with significant unmet medical need. Concussions alone currently account for medical costs of roughly $10-15 billion annually in the U.S., despite the lack of a currently approved FDA drug treatment. This need is particularly apparent in the military and sports industry, where the likelihood of athlete head-injury recurrence is estimated at 75%.

Collaboration with GM

On July 13, 2021, Cepton announced that it had secured an ADAS lidar series production award from a leading, Detroit-based global automotive OEM – the biggest lidar production award by any OEM to any lidar company. On July 28, 2021, Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) distributed an article on Medium noting, “Ford has been engaged with Cepton almost since their inception in 2016, both for R&D collaboration and small-scale deployments. Cepton LiDAR are deployed in some of [Ford’s] smart city projects. Based on Ford’s guidance, Cepton delivered a custom version of their LiDAR to enable R&D on advanced ADAS features.”

The hydrogen economy is currently facing many challenges.
