In what feels like a plot straight out of a sci-fi movie, Chechen warlord Ramzan Kadyrov has claimed that billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk remotely deactivated a Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) Cybertruck that he supposedly gifted him in Chechnya. Kadyrov, who is close to Vladimir Putin, said that Musk “switched off” the Cybertruck from across the globe.

The saga began when Kadyrov shared a video of himself driving a Tesla Cybertruck outfitted with a machine gun on its roof. When Musk gifted Kadyrov the electric pickup truck, he was over the moon. According to the Chechen leader, it is fast, comfortable, maneuverable and nearly indestructible, in other words, a “cyberbeast.” He shared a video of himself driving through the empty streets of Grozny, hopping out of the truck with an ammunition belt around his neck, and posing with the mounted machine gun.

Even though the cybertruck was designed to handle rough terrain, the claims that it was turned into a war machine raised eyebrows. As expected, the story quickly spread and even caught the attention of Musk himself. Without mincing words, the Tesla CEO responded on X, questioning the authenticity of the claim. He wrote, “Are you honestly so foolish to believe that I gifted a cybertruck to a Russian general?”

Soon after Musk dismissed the idea that he had gifted Kadyrov the high-tech vehicle, Kadyrov made an even more bizarre allegation. He shared a post on Telegram that claimed that Musk had remotely disabled the cybertruck.

Furthermore, Kadyrov shared more claims that the Cybertruck was part of the war in Ukraine, where it performed “admirably.” Of course, these are just unverified claims. However, they align with Kadyrov’s earlier assertions that the truck will take part in a “special military operation zone” supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

These claims couldn’t come at a worst time. There has been tension between Musk and the Ukrainian authorities. Even though Musk provided the Starlink satellite network to aid Ukraine’s defense, he still faced criticism for refusing to allow Starlink to be used in attacks on Crimea. Because of the uneasy relationship, Kadyrov’s claims are more intriguing.

Many are asking if Musk could actually disable the cybertruck. Technically speaking, it is possible to switch off the cybertrucks because they are connected to the internet and can receive software updates remotely. With the right access, someone could disable certain functions of the truck from miles away.  However, whether Musk actually did this remains a mystery.

The European Union’s automobile industry is calling for desperate action amid a notable fall in new electric vehicle car sales. Consumer demand for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) across the EU has fallen significantly in recent months, and carmakers are finding it increasingly difficult to sell their new electric cars.

The regional bloc’s car industry is now asking policymakers to take action to safeguard the EU’s transition to electric cars. If no action is taken, the sector says, the transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) cars to electric cars will put significant financial strain on the economy. Furthermore, it could jeopardize the European Union’s zero-emission goals, automakers say.

Four of the European Union’s largest markets registered notable reductions in new vehicle registrations last month. Germany, France, Italy and Spain saw new-vehicle registrations fall by 27.8%, 24.3%, 13.4% and 6.5%, respectively, while the EU saw an 18.3% drop in new vehicle registrations across the board.

Additionally, the market share of EVs in the European Union (EU) fell by a whopping 43.9% year-over-year, from 21% of the market in 2023 to 14.4% this year. These figures are a major departure from August 2023’s numbers, which showed both new-vehicle and new-electric-vehicle sales jump by more than 21%.

However, even though sales figures for the first eight months of 2024 are still promising, carmakers in Europe are worried that they won’t be able to meet certain 2025 carbon-emission reduction targets for vans and cars. The recent fall in electric vehicle demand has forced most carmakers to rethink their electrification strategies. Many of them are now scaling back as it becomes clear that consumers still aren’t fully sold on electric cars.

However, the transportation sector is responsible for a large portion of the EU’s emissions and is still beholden to various emission-reduction targets. As a result, the vehicle industry is asking policymakers to step in and address the fall in EV demand to ensure the EU achieves its transition targets. The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) released a statement emphasizing that the EU’s vehicle sector supports Europe’s decarbonization goals and has invested billions of dollars into developing zero-emission electric cars for the European market.

Even so, the ACEA said, the industry still hasn’t achieved the conditions required to ramp up electric-vehicle production or effectively deploy public-hydrogen refilling and EV-charging infrastructure. Marijuana retailers in the state of New York raked in more than $429 million in revenue between January and August of this year. Just last month, sales made each week exceeded $20 million for the first time ever. New York made marijuana legal in March 31, 2021, following the approval of the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act. However, the state’s first sales were recorded in December 2022.

The Office of Cannabis Management’s deputy director of policy, John Kagia, stated that while some momentum had been lost in 2023, the office had known that with enough effort and time, the market would become operational. A measure that was approved in May, which granted law enforcement in New York the authority to close the premises of any individual found selling cannabis without a permit, also came in clutch.

In an August interview, Governor Kathy Hochul revealed that since the crackdown’s launch, nearly 1350 alleged illegal sellers of cannabis had been apprehended. According to the governor, the shutdown of this illicit market has allowed regulated cannabis sales from licensed retailers to increase.

Kagia added that clamping down on unlicensed retailers and increasing permits had also helped improve regulated sales. Park Strategies MD, Joseph Rossi, noted that this is good news for those who were affected by the illicit market.

With about 200 licensed retailers set to launch their businesses by the end of September, finishing the year with more than $1 billion in regulated cannabis sales is possible. While surpassing the billion-dollar threshold would represent a significant increase in regulated cannabis sales, it is still lower than initial sales projections for the state.

Critics and regulators acknowledge that there is more that needs to be done, especially when it comes to the processing of the many pending license applications. Normally, it takes anywhere between six and nine months after obtaining an initial permit for retailers to open their businesses.

Of the total retail permits issued thus far, about 200 are Conditional Adult Use Retail Dispensary permits, which are reserved for parties disproportionately impacted by the war on drugs and nonprofits. Taylor Randi Lee, spokesperson for the Office of Cannabis Management (OCM), revealed recently that an estimated 4,000 permit applications are yet to be processed. Acting OCM executive director Felicia Reid believes the backlog may take until 2025 to be cleared.

Currently, the state has 189 licensed retailers, which is lower than the number of licensed stores in Missouri. The midwestern state, which has one-third of New York’s population, legalized recreational marijuana in 2022.

A recent study involving hundreds of individuals using medical cannabis has shown significant and rapid improvements in overall health during the first three months of use, according to research from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM). The findings, published in the “Cannabis Research Journal,” followed almost 400 adults in Pennsylvania who were new to medical marijuana treatments.

The participants, who were 46 years of age on average, used medical cannabis to address more than 20 health conditions recognized under Pennsylvania’s qualifying medical cannabis program. The most common conditions treated were severe chronic pain and anxiety disorders.

The research revealed that the respondents experienced health improvements in all aspects of their lives, including reduced pain, increased energy levels and enhanced physical, emotional and social functioning.

Lead researcher Dr. Michelle R. Lent noted that more research needs to be done to determine the long-term effects of medicinal cannabis use on health and everyday functioning. Further, she emphasized that the study — one of the most extensive so far — provides valuable insights into how medical marijuana use affects people’s lives.

“Knowing which patients can benefit most from particular therapies is crucial in this era of personalized medicine,” she added.

The respondents noted significant gains in their emotional well-being and capacity to carry out everyday duties, among other areas, after three months. Positive changes were also observed in social interactions and physical constraints.

These gains, according to the study, constituted what the researchers defined as clinically relevant progress. Notably, social functioning improved by 20%, emotional health improved by 15% and reported pain levels decreased by 20%. Compared to older adults, younger participants showed the greatest improvements in terms of their physical and pain-related outcomes.

Lent noted that deciding whether to include medical cannabis as part of a treatment plan can be difficult for both patients and healthcare providers. However, studies such as this one offer evidence in favor of more widespread access to medical marijuana treatments.

The researchers assessed the participants at intervals of three, six, nine and twelve months. While data beyond the three-month mark have yet to be fully analyzed, future studies aim to explore whether these early improvements are sustained over the longer term.

The majority of participants in the study were white and female, which may offer additional insights into the specific populations benefiting from medical-marijuana treatments.

Tellurium and the Green Energy Revolution

The Biden administration has instituted a stream of policies, particularly the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act, to source solar components from North America and other “friendly” jurisdictions.

Deer Horn Tellurium-Gold-Silver-Copper Project

Deer Horn is located on 51.33 square kilometers (km) in west-central British Columbia, 36 km south of the prolific Huckleberry copper-molybdenum mine and 135 km southwest of the community of Burns Lake. It is one of few significant tellurium discoveries outside Asia and includes a 2.4 km-long vein system of high-grade gold, silver and tellurium, as well as broader zones of bulk-tonnage gold, silver and tellurium mineralization. The company completed a positive Preliminary Economic Estimate and has begun permitting for a 10,000-tonne bulk sample program to advance the project toward mine feasibility. It is North America’s only silver-gold-tellurium property with an NI 43-101 compliant tellurium resource, and it hosts a number of other mineralized targets and zone containing critical metals such as copper, tungsten and zinc.

First Tellurium owns 50% of the property, with an option to acquire up to a 75% interest. The company has engaged Dias Geophysical of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, to conduct induced polarization (IP) geophysics on the Deer Horn Project in summer 2023. The program is designed to help develop drill targets for a subsequent drilling program.

Klondike Gold-Tellurium Project

The Klondike property is located in Saguache County, Colorado, southwest of Buena Vista in the state’s historical mining district. The company reports it has engaged Burgex Mining Consultants of Sandy, Utah, to stake additional claims around the Klondike property. The claims have been filed with the Bureau of Land Management.

Klondike demonstrates exceptional tellurium grades. Tellurium, used in high-efficiency cadmium telluride (Cd-Te) solar panels, next-generation lithium-ion batteries and thermoelectric devices to change heat into energy, is an essential element for the world’s transition to green energy.

The Klondike property was a top tellurium prospect owned previously by First Solar Inc., one of the world’s largest solar panel producers. First Solar terminated its worldwide raw materials exploration program in 2012 and sold the property to Colorado Klondike LLC, which optioned the project to First Tellurium. Colorado Klondike, led by First Solar’s former Exploration Manager in North America, is managing the upcoming exploration program.

The Colorado Geological Survey (CGS), in partnership with the Colorado School of Mines, reported on First Solar’s exploration at Klondike in 2015, noting: “Surface sampling by First Solar, Inc. in 2006 found very high tellurium grades of up to 3.3% (33,000 ppm), along with locally high gold grades. Tellurium grades at Klondike were the highest encountered in the company’s nationwide exploration program.”

Market Outlook

First Tellurium in spring 2023 referenced recent forecasts by the International Energy Agency (IEA) pointing to rapid growth in solar photovoltaic (solar PV) deployment worldwide. According to the agency, solar PV installations will generate more power by 2027 than any other energy source, including coal, natural gas and hydro. To meet this demand, consumption of both silver and tellurium, key components of solar panels, is expected to surge in coming years.

Chen Lin, founder of Lin Asset Management, has written in his investment newsletter for clients that solar PV is now the largest industrial usage of silver. He said that in 2022 solar PV production used about 12% of total silver demand, or about 120 million ounces of silver. Lin expects this number to rise dramatically in the coming years, and that is likely to lead to silver supply deficits for decades to come.

Lin points out that solar power is now the cheapest source of energy in many parts of the world and that all forecasts point to dramatic expansion of solar PV in the coming two decades. Conservative estimates forecast 300 gigawatts of solar PV production by 2027, up from the current level of about 200 gigawatts.

Renforth Resources Inc. (CSE: RFR) (OTCQB: RFHRF) is an active mineral exploration company engaged in the exploration and development of the company’s wholly owned multi-commodity mineral properties in Canada. The company owns the Parbec gold deposit on the Cadillac Break in Quebec and is currently exploring the Parbec property to increase the gold resource and identify a location to strip and bulk sample from surface.

In addition, the company holds the Nixon Bartleman gold property in Ontario and is also engaged in developing its wholly owned Malartic Metals Package, Quebec’s newest polymetallic battery minerals district with several areas of mineralization, one of which is the nickel, cobalt, copper and zinc mineralized Victoria structure boasting approximately 20 kilometers of strike with surface mineralization, limited drilling, road access and hydroelectric power.

Renforth is well positioned in the heart of the Abitibi Greenstone belt, which straddles the Canadian Provinces of Ontario and Quebec, on both of the Cadillac-Larder Lake and Destor-Porcupine faults – the two main structures responsible for a belt endowed with more than 300 million ounces of gold (including production, M&I reserves and resources to date), making it one of the world’s most prospective gold regions.

The Canadian Malartic Mine, one of Canada’s largest gold mines, is adjacent to each of Renforth’s brownfield Malartic area properties, the Parbec open pit gold resource and the Malartic Metals Package, which, in addition to several known battery metals mineralized structures, also hosts gold within the Pontiac sediments, a very under-explored geological setting.

Projects

Parbec Gold Deposit

Renforth’s 100% owned Parbec Gold Deposit contains a gold resource designed with an open pit to capitalize on Parbec’s surface mineralization. An MRE on the project, effective December 2019 and now considered by Renforth to be obsolete, is based upon approximately 28,000 meters of drilling which occurred between 2007 and 2019.

Renforth drilled 15,000 meters of new holes in 2020 and 2021 which were not included in the MRE, but which did extend the mineralization deeper within the MRE. The 2020-21 drilling is considered to have validated an additional 13,000 meters of historic drilling from 1986-93.

The validation occurs as 10% of the historic holes were redrilled, with results comparable to the historic results in terms of geology and gold values. Any future MRE calculated at Parbec will benefit from the inclusion of the new and historic drilling.

In addition to this, Renforth’s current structural interpretation on the location of, and controls on, the gold mineralization at Parbec is materially different than the geological model for the outdated MRE. For the first time, Renforth has mapped the Pontiac contact and interpreted a hinge fold interacting with the Cadillac Break and allowing the movement of gold enriched fluids, with mineralization plunging to the south, into the Pontiac.

It is worth noting that a structural control on the adjacent, and much larger, Canadian Malartic Mine is the Sladen Fault transiting into the Pontiac. Currently, Renforth is testing this interpretation with a soil survey designed to outline an area for stripping and bulk sampling within the Pontiac south of the Cadillac Break.

Malartic Metals Package

Renforth’s wholly owned approximately 300-square-kilometer Malartic Metals Package in Quebec’s mining heartland includes surface mineralization of battery metals nickel, cobalt, copper, zinc and silver in separate structures, as well as a copper/silver discovery and gold mineralization. Lithium is also present in anomalous amounts in the sediments, though the source has not yet been located.

The property was assembled commencing in 2020 by adding claims to Renforth’s existing Malartic West property by map staking. The goal was to acquire historic gold and base metal showings, as well as pronounced magnetic anomalies, joining several of the areas of discrete historic exploration into a district scale property with several areas of interest for battery metals and a greenfield copper/silver discovery. The property benefits from its location in an established mining community, roads on the property, rail just off the property and hydroelectric power lines crossing the property, making logistics simple and the cost to operate quite low.

This is the first time this property has been assembled as it is today and actively explored. A significant portion of the property has never been explored.

Market Overview

The World Gold Council, the industry association for the world’s gold producers, estimated in 2023 the physical financial gold market, which is made up of bars, coins, gold ETFs and central bank reserves, is worth nearly $5 trillion. The council reports that gold mine production adds approximately 3,500 tons of the precious metal to the world’s supply annually, equivalent to about 2% growth.

This historical scarcity and relatively slow production of new supply, as compared to other commodities, is a primary reason gold has retained its value for millennia, according to the council. In August 2024, the market price of gold was approximately $2,435 per ounce.

Nicole Brewster is President and CEO of Renforth Resources. During her tenure she has reconstituted the company, developed a maiden mineral resource and sold a gold deposit.
