Researchers have discovered that a common plant in Brazil contains the cannabis ingredient cannabidiol (CBD). This discovery creates new opportunities for the production of the well-known substance from alternative sources.

A group of scientists from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro uncovered CBD in the flowers and fruits of the Tremamicranthablume (trema) plant, a common shrub found throughout Brazil. According to lead scientist Rodrigo Moura Neto, the plant, which is sometimes categorized as a weed, is a promising source of CBD.

CBD, recognized for its potential in managing anxiety, chronic pain and epilepsy, stands as a key active component in marijuana, alongside tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is responsible for inducing the “high” associated with cannabis use.

While CBD’s medicinal efficacy remains under scientific scrutiny, Neto’s chemical analysis confirmed the presence of CBD in trema while ruling out the existence of THC. This development points to the likelihood of discovering additional sources of CBD, evading the legal constraints tethered to marijuana, which remains prohibited in many regions, including Brazil.

“It presents a legal alternative to marijuana use,” said Neto, highlighting the ubiquitous growth of trema throughout Brazil and emphasizing its potential as a more accessible and cost-effective CBD source. He also noted that CBD had previously been found in a related plant in Thailand.

Additionally, a different study published in May 2023 in the “Nature Plants” Journal revealed that the woolly umbrella, a plant native to South Africa, contained more than a dozen different types of cannabinoids. Despite the plant’s inability to produce CBD or THC, researchers did discover notable concentrations of cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), cannabichromene (CBC) and cannabibigerol (CBG).

On top of studying the connections between “nonconformist thinking styles,” the researchers also explored the association between forming alternative views and other substances like alcohol. They found that there is a link between psychedelic use and belief in alternative viewpoints such as conspiracy theories. Additionally, they discovered a “moderate-positive association” between the idea that politics can influence factual information and psychedelic use, indicating that psychedelic users may be more inclined to believe that factual information isn’t inherently resistant to political influence.

The researchers also found that a history of psychedelic use did not have any significant connection to a preference for intuition-based beliefs rather than evidence-based beliefs, challenging the notion that psychedelic users are more likely to have fringe or alternative beliefs.

Generally, the poll found that psychedelic users tend to look at widely accepted facts with more skepticism than the average person. The researchers surmised that a history of psychedelic use is connected with believing alternative facts and the belief that political agendas influence factual information.

The poll comes at a time of rising psychedelic use in the country amid historic levels of misinformation and political violence. Psychedelics have drawn a lot of public attention in recent months, thanks to studies connecting them to significant improvements in mental health. Last week, an alliance of marijuana companies in the state of Massachusetts filed a lawsuit that challenges the federal prohibition of cannabis as it applies to individual states. Currently, marijuana remains classified as a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substances Act. This is despite the fact that the medical use of marijuana is legal in 38 states, 4 U.S. territories and the federal District of Columbia. Adult-use marijuana is also legal in 23 states, 3 U.S. territories and D.C.

The Controlled Substances Act was enacted by the 91st United States Congress and signed into law by President Richard Nixon in 1970.

In their suit, the companies argue that the Controlled Substances Act, which prohibits the growing, manufacture, sale and possession of intrastate cannabis, is an unconstitutional ban. They maintain that this act deprives marijuana companies of their rights under the Fifth Amendment by depriving them of liberty without due process and by introducing unlawful and unwarranted federal government intrusion into their businesses.

The coalition has asked that the Massachusetts district court deem the act to be unconstitutional, in their quest for a declaratory judgment. The suit names its sole defendant as U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland.

The challengers also note that the Controlled Substances Act subverts state cannabis programs, giving the example of the 2012 Massachusetts Medical Marijuana Initiative. During this time, voters in the state opted to legalize medical cannabis. A few years later in 2016, the Massachusetts Marijuana Legalization Initiative was introduced, with voters legalizing recreational cannabis for adults.

The lawsuit states that the comprehensive state regulations protect consumers while also ensuring that the regulated cannabis sold in Massachusetts is distinguishable from illegal, interstate cannabis.

The suit also claims that the Controlled Substances Act harms small and large businesses and threatens public safety. The companies argue that because of this act, marijuana businesses aren’t able to take part in federal programs. It also leads to issues with advertising, hiring, loans, payroll and insurance because most service providers have affiliations with the federal governments.

At the moment, state-regulated marijuana businesses are not allowed to use credit-card processors because financial institutions are regulated by the federal government. By relying on cash, most cannabis businesses have a higher risk of being robbed.

Following the suit’s filing, Verano president Darren Weis, stated that he was honored to be supporting this groundbreaking suit that pushed for equal treatment under the law. Weiss is one of the plaintiffs involved in the suit.

This lawsuit is likely to draw the attention of many cannabis companies that are operating in other jurisdictions such as TerrAscend Corp. (TSX: TSND) (OTCQX: TSNDF) since it could have implications for the industry across the country.

RapidSX™ Demonstration Plant

The Kingston, Ontario, RapidSX™ Demonstration Plant commissioning process is underway. Once commissioned, the plant is designed to demonstrate the commercial capabilities of the RapidSX technology platform.

The RapidSX demo plant will show:

  • The techno-economic advantages of the RapidSX technology platform
  • The processing of tens of tons of heavy and light mixed rare earth element concentrates in a simulated production environment
  • The platform’s ability to operate for thousands of semi-continuous run-time hours
  • Production of high-purity NdPr, praseodymium, neodymium, terbium and dysprosium rare earth elements for early OEM product qualification trials

The demo plant is located within Ucore’s 5,000-square-foot RapidSX Commercialization and Demonstration Facility and is run by its laboratory partner, Kingston Process Metallurgy Inc. (“KPM”).

RapidSX™ Technology

Innovation Metals Corp., acquired by the company in 2020, developed the RapidSX separation technology platform with early-stage assistance from the United States Department of Defense, later resulting in the production of commercial-grade, separated rare earth elements at pilot scale.

RapidSX combines the time-proven chemistry of conventional solvent extraction (SX) with a new column-based platform that significantly reduces time to completion and plant footprint, as well as potentially lowering capital and operating costs. SX is the international REE industry’s standard commercial separation technology and is currently used by all REE producers worldwide for bulk commercial separation of both heavy and light REEs.

Utilizing similar chemistry to conventional SX, RapidSX is not a “new” technology, but it represents a significant improvement on the well-established, well-understood, proven conventional SX separation technology preferred by REE producers.

Strategic Metals Complex

Ucore, engineering partner Mech-Chem Associates Inc. and KPM are developing the full-scale engineering for the company’s first Strategic Metals Complex (SMC). The SMC is a planned REE separation and rare earth oxide production plant slated to commence construction in Louisiana in 2023. It is scheduled to initially process 2,000 tons of total rare earth oxides by the end of 2024, increasing to 5,000 tons in 2026.

The company has three initial U.S.-friendly feedstock agreements in place for the Louisiana complex, along with multiple developing offtake agreements. It received a C$16 million+ incentive package offer from Louisiana Economic Development to support construction of the SMC.

Bokan-Dotson Ridge REE Deposit

Ucore has invested over C$35 million to establish and validate the Bokan-Dotson Ridge resource in preparation for mine design and permitting. Initial drilling is complete, and a Preliminary Economic Assessment has been issued. Next steps for the project include a feasibility study, detailed mine design and permit acquisition. The project can be “near shovel ready” for construction in less than 30 months after receipt of the next stage of development funding.

Market Opportunity

According to a report by Grand View Research, the global rare earth elements market was valued at $2.8 billion in 2018 and is forecast to reach a value of $5.6 billion by 2025, achieving a CAGR of 10.4% during the period. Market growth is driven by increasing demand for these elements in the manufacturing of magnets and catalysts for the automotive industry. Rising demand for electric vehicles to reduce CO2 emissions is expected to propel the use of permanent magnets in the production of EV batteries.

China is the major producer and consumer of REEs. To maintain self-sufficiency and to meet future demand, China has been raising the export tariffs on rare earth elements shipped to various countries, including the U.S., Japan, India, Brazil and the European Union. This led to the current supply-demand gap in these countries, as they rely on imports from China.

China reduced the exports of REEs by 72% in the second half of 2010 to preserve its reserves of these elements and continues to export REEs at reduced levels, thereby affecting industries such as automotive, oil and gas, and electronics, which require an ample amount of rare earth elements.

Tellurium and the Green Energy Revolution

The U.S. is now looking to secure safe, domestic sources of tellurium and many other critical metals to pre-empt potential shortages. The Biden administration has instituted a stream of policies, particularly the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act, to source solar components from North America and other “friendly” jurisdictions.

As the only junior mining company in the world focused on tellurium exploration, First Tellurium is ahead of the curve in capitalizing on these initiatives to establish strategic, domestic supplies of key resources for solar panel manufacturers.

Projects

Deer Horn Tellurium-Gold-Silver-Copper Project

Deer Horn is located on 51.33 square kilometers (km) in west-central British Columbia, 36 km south of the prolific Huckleberry copper-molybdenum mine and 135 km southwest of the community of Burns Lake. It is one of few significant tellurium discoveries outside Asia and includes a 2.4 km-long vein system of high-grade gold, silver and tellurium, as well as broader zones of bulk-tonnage gold, silver and tellurium mineralization. The company completed a positive Preliminary Economic Estimate and has begun permitting for a 10,000-tonne bulk sample program to advance the project toward mine feasibility. It is North America’s only silver-gold-tellurium property with an NI 43-101 compliant tellurium resource, and it hosts a number of other mineralized targets and zone containing critical metals such as copper, tungsten and zinc.

First Tellurium owns 50% of the property, with an option to acquire up to a 75% interest. The company has engaged Dias Geophysical of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, to conduct induced polarization (IP) geophysics on the Deer Horn Project in summer 2023. The program is designed to help develop drill targets for a subsequent drilling program.

Klondike Gold-Tellurium Project

The Klondike property is located in Saguache County, Colorado, southwest of Buena Vista in the state’s historical mining district. The company reports it has engaged Burgex Mining Consultants of Sandy, Utah, to stake additional claims around the Klondike property. The claims have been filed with the Bureau of Land Management.

Klondike demonstrates exceptional tellurium grades. Tellurium, used in high-efficiency cadmium telluride (Cd-Te) solar panels, next-generation lithium-ion batteries and thermoelectric devices to change heat into energy, is an essential element for the world’s transition to green energy.

The Klondike property was a top tellurium prospect owned previously by First Solar Inc., one of the world’s largest solar panel producers. First Solar terminated its worldwide raw materials exploration program in 2012 and sold the property to Colorado Klondike LLC, which optioned the project to First Tellurium. Colorado Klondike, led by First Solar’s former Exploration Manager in North America, is managing the upcoming exploration program.

The Colorado Geological Survey (CGS), in partnership with the Colorado School of Mines, reported on First Solar’s exploration at Klondike in 2015, noting: “Surface sampling by First Solar, Inc. in 2006 found very high tellurium grades of up to 3.3% (33,000 ppm), along with locally high gold grades. Tellurium grades at Klondike were the highest encountered in the company’s nationwide exploration program.”

Market Outlook

First Tellurium in spring 2023 referenced recent forecasts by the International Energy Agency (IEA) pointing to rapid growth in solar photovoltaic (solar PV) deployment worldwide. According to the agency, solar PV installations will generate more power by 2027 than any other energy source, including coal, natural gas and hydro. To meet this demand, consumption of both silver and tellurium, key components of solar panels, is expected to surge in coming years.

Chen Lin, founder of Lin Asset Management, has written in his investment newsletter for clients that solar PV is now the largest industrial usage of silver. He said that in 2022 solar PV production used about 12% of total silver demand, or about 120 million ounces of silver. Lin expects this number to rise dramatically in the coming years, and that is likely to lead to silver supply deficits for decades to come.

Lin points out that solar power is now the cheapest source of energy in many parts of the world and that all forecasts point to dramatic expansion of solar PV in the coming two decades. Conservative estimates forecast 300 gigawatts of solar PV production by 2027, up from the current level of about 200 gigawatts.

  • RENB-HV01 – Caring Cross, a non-profit corporation, has shown that its proprietary CAR-T cells cure HIV in a mouse model. Studies in humans have begun. Renovaro has entered into a profit-sharing sublicense with Caring Cross and would share in profits if the product is commercialized.
  • RENB-HB01 – This therapeutic approach aims to eliminate all HBV rapidly (“seek and kill”) with a two to three dose treatment regimen. These cells have been shown to have characteristics that allow them to be transplanted from a donor to host without triggering a harmful immune response in the recipient, and they can be administered on an outpatient basis in as little as 40 minutes after thawing. Because of these characteristics, Lomecel-B™ is considered an “off-the-shelf” product.

In some trials, such as for Alzheimer’s disease and Aging-related Frailty, Lomecel-B™ is administered via peripheral intravenous infusion, while, in the Company’s HLHS trial, Lomecel-B™ is administered via direct injection into the heart tissue.

Iska Iska – Potosi, Bolivia

Iska Iska is associated with a Miocene possibly collapsed/resurgent caldera, emplaced on Ordovician age rocks with major breccia pipes, dacitic domes and hydrothermal breccias. The property is wholly controlled by the title holder, Empresa Minera Villegas S.R.L. It is located 48 kilometers north of Tupiza city, in the Sud Chichas Province of the Department of Potosi. This is an important mineral deposit type in the prolific South Mineral Belt of Bolivia. Eloro commissioned a NI 43-101 Technical Report on Iska Iska, which was completed by Micon International Limited and is available on Eloro’s website and under its filings on SEDAR.

A fully financed drill program is currently underway on the property, situated near world-class deposits including Silver Sand, San Bartolomé, Pulacayo, San Cristobal, San Vicente, Chorolque, Tasna, Choroma and Siete Suyos. Iska Iska is in the southwest part of the Eastern Cordillera, which hosts a number of major polymetallic mines and mineral deposits. Drilling and continuous channel sampling results have demonstrated some very high metal values, especially silver and tin, within an immense system, where mineralization has been encountered in every drill hole to date. The company believes there is excellent potential for world-class bulk mineable deposits.

La Victoria – Ancash, Peru

The La Victoria project, targeting gold and silver production, is situated near world-class, low-cost gold producers Pan American Silver and Barrick Gold Corporation. Located in Ancash Department, La Victoria sits on the western slopes of the Peruvian Andes. The property is located 12 hours from Lima, with a travel distance of 600 kilometers. The nearest road accessible population centers from La Victoria are Huandoval, Pallasca and Cabana. The project includes four principal mineralized zones in Peru’s prolific North-Central Mineral Belt – San Markito, Victoria, Victoria South and Ccori Orcco – with excellent potential for gold discovery. Operations at La Victoria are planned to proceed with a 2,000-meter diamond drilling program to test targets to outline potential resources at San Markito. Trenching and sampling confirmed high silver values and veins at San Markito in 2020.

Market Outlook

According to industry association The Silver Institute, the outlook for silver demand is exceptionally promising, with global demand forecast to rise to a record high of 1.112 billion ounces in 2022. The increase will be driven by record silver industrial fabrication, which is forecast to improve by 5%, as silver’s use expands primarily in solar energy and electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing. The institute states that government commitments to carbon neutrality have resulted in a rapid expansion of green energy projects, driving record photovoltaic panel installations which are expected to lift silver demand in this segment to an all-time high in 2022.

Rising demand in the electronics industry is also boosting the demand for tin, which is primarily used in solder.
