Bankman-Fried’s legal woes began last year when his crypto exchange firm, FTX, declared bankruptcy. FTX, previously valued at a staggering $32 billion, crumbled in November, leaving $8 billion in customer funds unaccounted for.

The jury found Bankman-Fried guilty on multiple charges, including deceiving investors and lenders and misappropriating billions from FTX, a sequence of events that played a role in the exchange’s collapse. He faced seven counts of money laundering and fraud.

Mark Cohen, Bankman-Fried’s lawyer, expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict, maintaining that his client would persist in his defense against the allegations.

Three of Bankman-Fried’s former associates — including his ex-girlfriend — testified against him and for the prosecution in an attempt to lessen their legal ramifications. The prosecution had solid evidence that showed that Bankman-Fried’s crypto hedge fund, Alameda Research, accepted customer deposits from FTX in its early days when conventional banks were unwilling to collaborate with the exchange. Rather than keeping the funds safe as agreed, Bankman-Fried diverted them to acquire property, repay Alameda debts, make political donations and invest.

Bankman-Fried’s conviction carries the potential for a substantial prison sentence. Five of the charges he faces come with a maximum term of 20 years each, while the other two have a five-year limit. Although it is improbable that he will serve the full 110-year sentence, he is expected to be incarcerated for an extended period.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicolas Roos, in his closing arguments, emphasized Bankman-Fried’s culpability, stating, “He knowingly misappropriated the funds, fully aware of its wrongfulness, believing that his intelligence would allow him to escape the consequences.”

In an attempt to persuade the jury that he had not behaved with criminal intent, Bankman-Fried took the bold decision to testify in his defense. He argued that the money transfers between his companies were acceptable and that he was largely unaware of the financial crisis described by his subordinates until just before FTX’s collapse.

His sentencing is scheduled for March 28, 2024, with the possibility of facing another trial on additional charges, including campaign finance violations. Judge Lewis Kaplan has asked the prosecution to make a decision by February regarding the potential second trial as it could influence his sentencing date.

Included in the initiative was $500 million in annual funding from government agency revenue bonds for loans and grants for psychedelic researchers.

Once it was up and running and the FDA had approved therapeutic psychedelic use, the agency would also facilitate the launch of care programs in the state for MDMA and psilocybin.

The campaign is now suspending signature-gathering efforts just a few weeks after the effort began began and redirecting its attention to Treat Humanity, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding education, research, therapies and access to treatments meant to optimize well-being and treat mental health.

The decision to suspend signature collection efforts comes shortly after FM3 Research ran a poll and found that at least 60% of Californians were not in favor of state funding being used to fund psychedelic research. The study will be a collaborative effort between UB, Oregon Health and Science University, and Thomas Jefferson University. It will be conducted in three separate locations, with each site enrolling 450 cancer patients undergoing immunotherapy treatment.

Studies conducted by UB indicate that approximately 40% of cancer patients turn to marijuana as an option to alleviate pain, enhance their mood and improve sleep quality. Nevertheless, despite cancer and its treatments being qualifying conditions in a majority of states where recreational or medical marijuana use is legal, there is a paucity of long-term studies examining the potential benefits and drawbacks of marijuana use for individuals undergoing immunotherapy.

Lead researcher Rebecca Ashare expressed the need for rigorous research in this domain, stating that although some cannabinoids are known for their anti-inflammatory properties, which can be advantageous in mitigating pain, they may also exert a suppressive effect on immune function.

To conduct the study, the research team will divide the participants into two groups: marijuana users and nonusers. Over the course of one year, the researchers will analyze blood samples, patients’ outcomes and medical records at six separate intervals. The grant will also facilitate a study into the impact of neighborhood disparities on outcomes related to immunotherapy and marijuana use.

Ashare stated that the overarching goal is to significantly impact cancer-symptom-management science and ultimately improve patient care and safety. Renovaro BioSciences Inc. These cells have been shown to have characteristics that allow them to be transplanted from a donor to host without triggering a harmful immune response in the recipient, and they can be administered on an outpatient basis in as little as 40 minutes after thawing. Because of these characteristics, Lomecel-B™ is considered an “off-the-shelf” product.

In some trials, such as for Alzheimer’s disease and Aging-related Frailty, Lomecel-B™ is administered via peripheral intravenous infusion, while, in the Company’s HLHS trial, Lomecel-B™ is administered via direct injection into the heart tissue.

The launch of the Florida E-Commerce Development Program is the first in a series of new NextPlat programs designed to assist U.S. businesses in expanding their online sales capabilities to reach new international customers in the Chinese market. NextPlat intends to rapidly expand this unique e-commerce development opportunity to businesses throughout the United States and all of North America, as well as Central and South America. The new development program features NextPlat’s turnkey global e-commerce solution for customers and leverages NextPlat’s relationships with key partners, including Tmall Global, China’s largest cross-border B2C online marketplace.
  • Progressive Care Inc. – In August 2022, NextPlat completed a strategic $7 million investment in Progressive Care Inc. (OTCQB: RXMD), a personalized health care services and technology company. In a news release announcing the investment, NextPlat CEO Charles M. Fernandez noted that the company is “committed to harnessing the power of digital technologies to capitalize on the ongoing digital transformation of Progressive Care and the entire health care industry.” NextPlat intends to accelerate Progressive Care’s digital health care transformation with the launch of a new e-commerce platform for health care products later this year.
  • NextPlat NFT Platform – Building on its existing e-commerce initiatives, NextPlat is working to bridge the gap between tangible and digital e-commerce marketplaces by incorporating burgeoning Web3 technologies. The company intends to launch a fully integrated NFT platform in the coming months that will enable brands to create, manage and authenticate digital assets while serving as a new source of revenue for NextPlat. Through this model, the company will receive a portion of the revenue generated from branded NFT drops, as well as subsequent secondary market transactions.
  • Global Telesat Communications and Orbital SatCom Corp. – Targeting both domestic and international markets, NextPlat’s subsidiaries leverage partnerships with major e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, Alibaba, eBay and Walmart to serve a growing base that includes more than 50,000 corporate, governmental and individual customers. In total, the brands market more than 10,000 individual products, with a focus on satellite-based connectivity solutions. In addition to exploring accretive M&A opportunities, NextPlat aims to diversify its range of products and broaden its geographic footprint moving forward in an effort to better capitalize on the tremendous growth potential in the United States, Europe and Asia.

Market Opportunity

The rapid growth of e-commerce over the last decade is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. According to data published by Forbes, roughly 20.8% of all retail purchases are expected to take place online in 2023, accounting for total sales of $6.31 trillion worldwide. It total, e-commerce sales are expected to grow by 10.4% YoY in 2023, accounting for a whopping 24% of all retail purchases by 2026.

For NextPlat, existing partnerships in the industry could be key to capitalizing on this growth. The Forbes report indicates that Amazon accounts for roughly 38.7% of e-commerce sales, while sites like Walmart, eBay and Alibaba round out the list of most visited e-commerce websites. Alibaba is especially interesting due to NextPlat’s recent strategic merchant sourcing agreement with Tmall Global. The Chinese market is “mammoth,” as a recent Alizila report noted. The country’s annual online retail sales of physical goods have nearly doubled in the last five years, reaching approximately 13.8 trillion yuan in 2022, which is nearly $2 trillion USD.

The health care portion of the e-commerce market is generating particularly bullish forecasts, bolstered by the continued adoption of the 340B Drug Pricing Program in the U.S., which requires most drug manufacturers to provide outpatient drugs to covered entities at significantly reduced prices. Industry reports suggest that the global health care e-commerce market will expand at a compound annual growth rate of 16.8% from 2022 to 2030, climbing to a value of more than $1.37 trillion by the end of the forecast period.

Charles M. Rodney Barreto is Chairman and CEO of the Barreto Group and Director of Nextplat. Mr. Barreto’s business career spans over 35 years, including his role at the Barreto Group and, earlier, as the founding partner of Floridian Partners LLC, a corporate and public affairs consulting firm recognized by policy makers as one of the top in its industry in Florida. Currently, Mr. Barreto is the Membership Chairman of the Florida Council of 100, and a member of the Boards of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, the Baptist Health South Florida Giving Society, the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust, the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, and a member of Miami Dade County Schools Superintendent Carvalho’s Business Advisory Council. ContraPest® targets the reproductive capabilities of Norway and roof rats. As a highly palatable liquid, the formulation promotes sustained consumption, helping to reduce fertility in both male and female rats, bringing populations down and keeping them down.

The company’s flagship offering can be used as part of integrated pest management (IPM) programs – fitting seamlessly into all IPM programs – to help reduce reproduction and magnify the success of these protocols, or as a standalone solution for customers who want to reduce or eliminate the use of lethal rodent control methods.

In multiple, independent field deployments, ContraPest was shown to reduce rat activity over 90% when added to an existing IPM program.

Delivery Systems and New Products

In July 2023, SenesTech began to distribute a new delivery system for ContraPest®, the Isolate Bait System™. This new delivery system brings to market a simple design that enables more efficient deployment, incorporates an enhanced formulation of ContraPest® that is expected to provide improved performance of the fertility control bait in the field and is paired with a new bait station that is more space-efficient and economical.

The other delivery systems available for ContraPest include the Ultimate Bait System™, a tank and tray in a larger format for use with more severe infestations, and the Elevate Bait System™, a unique delivery system that targets above ground infestations, as with roof rats.

SenesTech, as of August 2023, is also in the final stages of releasing a soft bait formulation, which provides the unique attributes of proven fertility control in an industry-familiar format demanded by big box retailers, key e-commerce channels and leading industry pest management professionals.

Market Opportunity

According to SenesTech’s figures, rats cause over $27 billion in damage to public and private infrastructure annually in the United States. Rats also destroy 20% of the global stored food supply every year by consuming or contaminating it.

Rats are known to spread at least 35 diseases, globally posing a dangerous risk to public health and safety. Not only does this age-old problem persist despite extensive campaigns to eradicate it, but multiple sources have reported that post-COVID rat populations have boomed.

Poison-based control methods sicken rats, and they typically die slowly. An animal that eats a poisoned rat may also sicken or die. The global rodenticide market is projected to be worth $1.7 billion by 2026.

In one case study, results reported by the customer showed a $5,000 investment in ContraPest® saved more than $500,000 annually in reduced labor, loss and damage.

Joel Fruendt is SenesTech’s President and CEO. He has 15 years of executive leadership in the vector and pest control industries as Vice President and General Manager of Clarke Environmental Inc., a leading vector and pest control products and services company. He has extensive expertise in the development and manufacturing of EPA-registered chemical control products, and the commercialization and sale of those products.
