Electric vehicles continued to make strong progress in the UK car market in October, taking over a quarter of all new car sales. The latest report from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that more drivers are choosing electric and hybrid models as confidence in cleaner transport grows.

The overall car market recorded a small increase of 0.5 percent in October, with 144,948 new cars sold across the country. While the growth was modest, it showed that demand for new vehicles remains steady. However, experts warned that a planned government tax change could slow down this progress in the coming months.

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) saw a sharp rise in popularity. Registrations jumped by 23.6 percent compared to the same month last year, with 7,028 more EVs added to UK roads. In total, electric cars made up 25.4 percent of all new registrations, marking the second-highest monthly share in 2025. This growth is impressive but still slightly below the 28 percent target set by the government’s Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate.

The Ford Puma remained the UK’s best-selling car for both October and the year so far, followed by the Kia Sportage in second place. A new name appeared among the top ten models, the Chinese-made Jaecoo 7, which ranked sixth and managed to outsell well-known cars like the Nissan Qashqai, VW Tiguan, and Audi A3. So far in 2025, BEV registrations have risen by 28.9 percent, reaching 386,244 units, already more than the total for 2024. Electric cars now represent 22.4 percent of all sales this year. This progress has been helped by carmaker discounts, government incentives like the Electric Car Grant, and a growing network of public charging points.

According to the SMMT, 2025 could become the strongest year for car sales since before the pandemic, with total registrations expected to reach 2.012 million. Even so, experts say more effort will be needed to meet future ZEV targets as the shift to electric driving continues to gain momentum across the UK.

Many governments around the world are still grappling with how to regulate cryptocurrencies, leaving them in a legal gray zone. However, a growing number of countries have begun defining digital assets as property, a move that clarifies ownership rights and integrates them into existing tax systems.

In the U.S., the IRS treats crypto as property for tax purposes, meaning profits from sales, exchanges, or purchases are subject to capital gains tax. British courts have taken a similar stance, recognizing digital tokens as personal property that can be traced, recovered, or frozen in cases of theft and fraud. Singapore’s court has also ruled that cryptocurrencies can be held in trust, confirming their status as assets protected under civil law.

India has also joined the growing list of jurisdictions acknowledging crypto as property. On October 25, the Madras High Court delivered a landmark interim judgment declaring that digital tokens like XRP qualify as property capable of being owned and held in trust under Indian law. The ruling represents the first formal recognition of crypto ownership rights in the country.

The case stemmed from a lawsuit filed by a WazirX user named Rhutikumari, whose 3,532.30 XRP—valued at roughly $9,400—was frozen after the exchange suffered a major hack in July 2024.

WazirX, one of India’s largest crypto exchanges, lost roughly $235 million in the breach. In response, it introduced a plan to distribute the financial impact across its user base, a move the petitioner argued infringed on her ownership rights.

The exchange defended its decision by citing approval from a Singapore court, contending the issue fell beyond Indian jurisdiction. The Madras High Court disagreed and found that since the user had funded her account through a bank in India and operated within India, the matter fell under domestic legal authority.

Justice N. Anand Venkatesh, who presided over the matter, concluded that digital assets are intangible but nevertheless qualify as property deserving legal protection. The court ordered WazirX’s Indian operator, Zanmai Labs, not to reallocate the petitioner’s tokens and to furnish a bank guarantee of approximately $11,500 as interim relief.

While India does not yet have a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital currencies, the 2022 Finance Act taxes them as “Virtual Digital Assets.” Profits from crypto trading are taxed at 30% on the gross amount. Additionally, a 1% tax is deducted on transfers over $113 to track transactions.

While the ruling applies only to this specific case, it could shape future legal interpretations and push Indian lawmakers to establish comprehensive rules for the country’s fast-evolving digital asset market.

Last week, gold’s price hovered around $4,000 an ounce, showing little movement after the sharp decline seen last month and prompting fresh debate about its future trajectory. Despite the recent dip, the metal is still on course for its strongest annual performance since the 70s. This is primarily thanks to strong buying from central banks, growing interest in gold-backed ETFs, and steady demand for bars and coins. 

Still, prices sit roughly 9% below the record level of more than $4,350 reached in September. 

Macquarie analysts argue that the precious metal had already reached its high point for now. They pointed out that several central banks moved to cut interest rates before the Federal Reserve, which has yet to signal whether another adjustment is coming in December. 

Since lower rates usually make gold more attractive compared to interest-earning assets, the shift matters for its outlook. 

Chief economist at the firm, Ric Deverell, explained that with most easing cycles wrapping up, real rates still elevated, and America-China tensions calming for the moment, they believe gold’s short-term top is likely in place and that prices may slip over the next year. He added that any decline should be gentler than past downturns, and that gold will probably stay well above where it ended 2023 throughout the current presidential term. 

For context, gold was trading near $2,000 per ounce about two years ago. The analysts also cautioned that renewed geopolitical strain or worries over the American government’s finances could give the metal another lift.

A report from the World Gold Council released recently noted that the dollar’s recent strength largely drove gold’s swing away from its record high. Still, several Wall Street firms think gold could climb from where it sits now before the year ends. 

Earlier this week, UBS analysts stated that although prices have slipped back to roughly $4,000 from their peak above $4,300, they still expect gold to reach $4,200 over the next year. They added that rising political or market risks could push the metal toward their higher target of $4,700. 

An even more bullish outlook was issued by Goldman Sachs, who forecast that gold could hit $4,900 per ounce by the end of next year. They argued that while the recent selloff may have been influenced by unwinding bullish options bets, persistent structural demand remains intact.

The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission has postponed a key vote on regulations that would open the door for social marijuana consumption across the state, with officials now aiming for a decision before Christmas. 

Commission Chair Shannon O’Brien outlined the revised timeline during the agency’s public meeting, which also marked the introduction of a new commissioner, Carrie Benedon. 

The proposal in question would permit marijuana consumers to buy and use products in the same location, a move advocates say would expand access and normalize legal consumption. However, commissioners opted to delay the vote to allow for further review. 

The proposal, first drafted in July, establishes three categories of licenses for social consumption. The first, a “supplemental” license, would enable existing cannabis retailers to create on-site consumption areas for their customers. A second, the “hospitality” license, would extend that privilege to certain non-marijuana venues such as theaters or cafes. The third, called an “event organizer” license, would allow temporary consumption spaces at approved gatherings and festivals. 

If approved, the first five years of licensing would be restricted to participants in the commission’s economic or social equity empowerment programs, along with microbusinesses and cooperatives. The commission noted that more adjustments could be made before final rules are adopted.

The Louisiana SMC is expected to scale from 2,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) of total rare earth oxides initially to 5,000 TPA, with potential to ultimately reach 7,500 TPA.

The facility benefits from Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) status, reducing tariff burdens on imported inputs and enhancing logistics efficiency. In addition to these structural advantages, the state of Louisiana has outlined an incentive package valued at $15 million, including a $900,000 infrastructure grant and $360,000 in additional local support. The project is expected to create 100 family-wage jobs and has received strong support from federal and state officials.

MAX Power holds multiple large land packages across Saskatchewan prospective for deposits of natural hydrogen, highlighted by the 200-km-long Genesis Trend and the 75-km-wide Grasslands Project.

Genesis features easy road, rail and power access and a proposed hydrogen hub on its eastern side where there is an abundance of potential end-users for natural hydrogen. Drilling is set to begin in early November 2025 at the Lawson target situated in the heart of Genesis. Canada’s first deep well for natural hydrogen is specifically designed to test a complete five-element hydrogen system interpreted to exist at Lawson: source rocks, migration pathways, reservoirs, seals, and traps. Data from vintage and proprietary 2D seismic, gravity and magnetic surveys, and subsurface mapping, among other geological and geophysical information, support the prospectivity of Lawson which lies adjacent to an extensive regional “Salt Barrier” offering excellent seal and trap conditions.

The Genesis Trend’s scalability is further demonstrated by the recent identification of the Lucky Lake target, approximately 50 km northwest of Lawson and one of at least 20 Lawson “look-a-likes” that is being investigated along the trend. Early interpretation suggests serpentinized rocks and structural features favorable for hydrogen generation exist at Lucky Lake.

At Grasslands, geologists are excited about a broad area in the vicinity of a well (“Climax”) near the U.S. border that was drilled a few years ago and inadvertently resulted in Canada’s first known deep subsurface occurrence of natural hydrogen, associated with a rare rock assemblage geologists refer to as “exotic terrane”. Permits covering an area stretching 75 km east-west and up to 10 km north-south were acquired by MAX Power next to this discovery, amplifying the company’s first-mover advantage. Adjacent to three sides of Grasslands are producing helium wells owned by privately-held North American Helium, demonstrating that this under-explored area of the province is highly prospective for clean gas. Drilling of a target at Grasslands is expected during Q1 2026.

Other MAX Power land packages are Rider 1, 2 and 3 in the southeast part of the province, and Choiceland in the north-central part of the province.
