A recent scientific review highlights increasing evidence that cannabidiol (CBD), a compound found in cannabis, has antidepressant effects on both animals and humans, with minimal side effects. The review also suggests that CBD may contribute to reducing inflammation and encouraging the growth of new brain cells.

According to the study, CBD shows promise as a potential depression treatment. While its antidepressant properties have been noted before, the exact mechanisms driving these effects remain unclear. To address this gap, the paper examines the molecular pathways, safety, and pharmacokinetics profile of CBD.

The study’s authors analyzed recent clinical and experimental studies and found that CBD’s effects are likely linked to its ability to lower inflammation and promote neurogenesis. Regarding how CBD interacts with the body, the researchers explained that its receptor mechanisms are highly intricate. They involve several receptors, such as PPARγ, CB1, 5-HT1A, CB2, and GPR55.

Although the review acknowledges CBD’s potential, it also emphasizes the need for further research into its long-term safety and possible side effects. Recent meta-analyses and systematic reviews generally describe CBD as having a strong safety profile, with only minor side effects, such as diarrhea.

However, the review also points out limitations that hinder CBD’s therapeutic potential. For instance, its limited water solubility and high hydrophobicity make it challenging to use in certain formulations. Furthermore, the therapeutic window may be constrained by CBD’s extremely poor oral-gastrointestinal absorption and its effects, which frequently follow an inverted U-shaped dose-response curve.

Given these challenges and uncertainties around optimal dosing, the authors call for further clinical trials and preclinical studies to refine its application. They stress that this research is vital, as conventional treatments for depression often fall short.

They state that while psychological therapies can benefit many with mild depression, only a small percentage of individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) receive pharmacological treatments, and around 30% of those patients do not respond to standard interventions.

While emerging therapies like ketamine provide rapid relief for some, they come with risks, including neurological, cardiovascular, and psychiatric side effects. Similarly, electroconvulsive therapy, though effective, can lead to cognitive issues, pain, and anesthesia-related problems.

The review underscores the historical use of marijuana for various ailments and the increasing interest in natural compounds like CBD, which offer therapeutic benefits with minimal side effects. It concludes by stressing the urgency of developing effective and innovative depression treatments.

The studies highlighting the therapeutic potential of cannabis compounds like CBD could give companies like SNDL Inc. (NASDAQ: SNDL) opportunities to develop customized products targeting individuals with symptoms that CBD and other cannabinoids can address.

A recent report from a German news magazine has revealed a massive Volkswagen leak that left the data of 800,000 electric vehicles exposed for several months. According to Der Spiegel, the months-long data leak exposed the phone numbers, email, and even physical addresses of some drivers. The leak raises questions about the safety of consumer data that companies have been collecting in increasing amounts over the past few years.

Der Spiegel was first notified of the data leak by a whistleblower and the Chaos Computer Club, Europe’s largest association of hackers. The German news magazine says the data leak occurred due to vulnerabilities in the software installed in Volkswagen’s vehicles. This software reportedly granted bad actors the ability to trace the exact movements of Volkswagen drivers.

The leak occurred on a global scale and involved electric vehicle brands under Volkswagen, such as Audi, Skoda, and Seat. Bad actors could use the software to locate and pull driver data stored in Amazon’s cloud storage before linking it to driver names and contact details. In some cases, they could also access data on when drivers switched their electric cars on and off as well as their physical addresses, mobile phone numbers, and email addresses.

Der Spiegel notes that the leak also provided ‘precise’ locations of around 460,000 vehicles, with data on Seat and Volkswagen vehicles being accurate to a whopping 10 centimeters and within 6 miles for Skoda and Audi cars.

Cariad, the Volkswagen subsidiary that developed the vulnerable software, says it has already dealt with the issue and told the German news magazine that sensitive data such as payment details or passwords wasn’t affected and that there was no need for action from Volkswagen customers. Volkswagen and Cariad didn’t respond to requests for a statement.

The Mozilla Foundation once referred to modern cars as a ‘privacy nightmare’ after a study discovered significant privacy concerns resulting from all the consumer data they collect. Vehicles were officially the worst products in terms of privacy, the foundation noted, with 84% of automakers reviewed in the study sharing the consumer data they collect with outside parties and 92% providing drivers with little to no control over their data.

As the global automotive industry phases out internal combustion engine (ICE) cars for electric vehicles, we can expect automakers to collect even more data from consumers. Without robust and ongoing defenses to keep this data safe, data breaches of even larger magnitudes could rock the auto industry in the future.

This situation at VW is likely to be taken as a cautionary tale by major EV industry players like Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) given how grave a leak of this nature could be upon their reputations.

Tesla Inc. (TSLA), closed Tuesday's trading session at $394.36, off by 4.0603%, on 75,699,525 volume. The average volume for the last 3 months is 212,143,639 and the stock's 52-week low/high is $138.8025/$488.5399.

Trulieve Cannabis Corp. (TCNNF)

QualityStocks, InvestorPlace, MarketBeat, Wealth Insider Alert, Daily Trade Alert, CannabisNewsWire, Cabot Wealth, Top Pros' Top Picks, The Street, Trades Of The Day, Profit Trends, TradersPro, The Online Investor, StreetInsider and Prism MarketView reported earlier on Trulieve Cannabis Corp. (TCNNF), and today we highlight the Company, here at the QualityStocks Daily Newsletter.

Medical marijuana patients in Kentucky will not have access to guns and ammunition due to federal law. Kentucky’s medical marijuana legalization bill was signed into law in March 2023 but took effect on January 1st, 2025, making it legal for approved citizens of the Commonwealth of Kentucky to consume medical-grade cannabis.

However, Kentuckians will also have to contend with federal law, which currently outlaws cannabis production and consumption, and how it differs from their state’s new medical cannabis law. The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives recently sent a letter informing federal firearms licensees that individuals who ‘unlawfully’ use controlled substances are legally barred from possessing guns or ammunition.

The Bureau also noted that such individuals aren’t allowed to transport or ship firearms. U.S. Federal law currently classifies marijuana as a Class I controlled substance with high potential for abuse and no proven medical benefits, contrary to dozens of states that have allowed medical and recreational cannabis consumption.

The difference between state and federal cannabis laws has been a constant thorn in the state-level cannabis industry’s side and consumers often end up as the casualties. In Kentucky, the federal government has made it clear that Kentuckians will have to choose between gun ownership and medical marijuana.

Kentucky NORML Executive Director Matthew Bratcher says he is happy about the medical marijuana progress Kentucky has made and hopes the federal government will update its marijuana laws.

This isn’t the first time Americans in a state with a regulated cannabis market have been forced to choose between owning a gun or benefiting from medical marijuana and it won’t be the last as long as cannabis is controlled at the federal level.

Many Kentuckians weren’t pleased to learn that consuming medical marijuana would disqualify them from gun ownership. In the comment section of a WPSD Local 6 Facebook post about the policy, one wondered why consuming alcohol, which causes significantly more mental and physical impairment compared to cannabis, doesn’t make it illegal to own a firearm, yet consuming cannabis does.

Another said gun ownership is a constitutional right and argued that Kentuckians should not be forced to give up their rights to access legal medication.

According to a previous statement from Batcher, the law preventing marijuana users from owning guns has seen limited enforcement in other states that legalized marijuana before Kentucky. He says firearm owners in Kentucky may not have to deal with the police when they seek medical marijuana licenses.

In the meantime, Batcher hopes Kentucky’s medical cannabis program expands its list of qualifying medical conditions and increases the number of eligible Kentuckians to hundreds of thousands.

Marijuana industry actors like Trulieve Cannabis Corp. (CSE: TRUL) (OTCQX: TCNNF) may be saddened that patients who need to manage their symptoms using medical marijuana are placed in a situation where they have to choose between taking the medical cannabis products they need or avoid using those products in order to retain their legally-acquired firearms.

Trulieve Cannabis Corp. (TCNNF), closed Tuesday's trading session at $5.25, off by 1.5563%, on 222,497 volume. The average volume for the last 3 months is 10,491,448 and the stock's 52-week low/high is $4.44/$14.50.

Lucid Motors (NASDAQ: LCID) has introduced a groundbreaking feature in its electric vehicles (EVs): the ‘Lucid Assistant.’ Powered by SoundHound AI’s innovative Chat AI technology, this advanced voice assistant aims to revolutionize how drivers interact with their cars.

The Lucid Assistant is designed to make driving safer and more convenient. With simple voice commands activated by saying “Hey Lucid,” drivers can control essential vehicle functions like navigation, access the full car manual, and get real-time information. This hands-free interaction allows drivers to focus on the road while still accessing vital features.

What sets the Lucid Assistant apart is its ability to function without a cellular connection. This means drivers can ask about weather updates, sports scores, or stock market data even in areas with poor network coverage. Additionally, the system supports multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, Arabic, German, and Dutch, with plans to add more languages soon.

Lucid’s new assistant is the first to fully integrate generative AI into a production vehicle. Unlike traditional voice command systems, this assistant offers a natural, conversational interaction. It combines advanced AI features with real-time knowledge to answer questions quickly and accurately.

To enhance reliability, the Lucid Assistant employs technology that reduces “AI hallucinations”—misleading or incorrect responses common in some large language models. This ensures drivers receive trustworthy and relevant information during their journey.

Lucid Motors has committed to keeping the Lucid Assistant up to date. Regular over-the-air software updates will bring new features and improvements, ensuring the technology stays relevant and useful for users.

The Lucid Assistant is powered by SoundHound AI, a leading voice AI company experiencing significant growth. SoundHound’s revenue increased by 76% year-over-year in Q3 2024, reaching $25.1 million. This success is attributed to its innovative technology and expanding partnerships, including its role in transforming customer service for businesses.

SoundHound’s stock has gained attention from investors, with a surge of over 850% in 2024. Analysts have raised price targets, recognizing the company’s strong potential. Despite its success, SoundHound is still working toward profitability, reporting an EBITDA loss of $88.4 million in the past year.

The collaboration between Lucid Motors and SoundHound AI reflects their shared vision of improving the driving experience. According to SoundHound AI’s COO, Michael Zagorsek, the new voice assistant technology is poised to change how people interact with vehicles.

The Lucid Assistant is more than a voice command system; it’s a leap forward in vehicle technology. By combining intuitive AI features, multi-language support and ongoing updates, Lucid Motors is setting a new standard for EVs. As this technology continues to evolve, it promises to make driving safer, smarter, and more engaging.

Lucid Motors (LCID), closed Tuesday's trading session at $3.18, off by 4.5045%, on 113,550,832 volume. The average volume for the last 3 months is 322,930 and the stock's 52-week low/high is $1.93/$4.43.

VanEck Senior Investment Analyst Patrick Bush and Head of Digital Asset Research Matthew Sigel have shared their top ten predictions for the 2025 cryptocurrency industry. Here’s an overview of their insights:

  1. Crypto market bull run to hit two peaks

The ongoing bull market is expected to continue into 2025, with a peak anticipated in Q1. The analysts forecast that Bitcoin will reach around $180,000, while Ethereum may climb to over $6,000.

A market pullback of 30% for Bitcoin and up to 60% for altcoins is likely during the summer months, followed by a resurgence in the fall. By the end of the year, leading tokens are projected to hit new record highs.

  1. Bitcoin to gain strategic importance for the U.S.

Bitcoin’s adoption as a strategic reserve asset could accelerate under a more crypto-friendly U.S. administration. Leaders aligned with crypto interests are expected to drive regulatory reforms, marking the end of restrictive policies like debanking. This shift would position Bitcoin as a key financial asset for the U.S.

  1. Tokenized securities to break $50 billion in value

Tokenized securities are set to gain traction in 2025, exceeding $50 billion in total value. Currently valued at $12 billion, most are private credit securities on the Provenance blockchain. The analysts foresee significant growth as these assets transition to public blockchains, driving transparency and efficiency in financial markets.

  1. Stablecoin transactions to soar

Stablecoins are predicted to settle $300 billion in daily transactions by the end of the year, up from $100bn in late 2024. With growing adoption by tech giants and payment platforms, stablecoins are poised to revolutionize global commerce. Cross-border remittances, such as those between Mexico and the U.S., are expected to grow fivefold, demonstrating their utility in real-world applications.

  1. AI agents to take center stage in blockchain ecosystems

According to the analysts, autonomous AI agents, capable of optimizing user outcomes, are projected to surpass one million active agents by 2025. Platforms like Virtuals enable anyone to create these bots, leveraging decentralized AI contributors to enhance efficiency. These agents will play a pivotal role in blockchain-based innovations.

  1. Bitcoin layer 2 solutions to expand

Bitcoin Layer 2 (L2) blockchains are expected to lock in 100,000 Bitcoins in total value. These advancements improve Bitcoin’s scalability and introduce smart contract capabilities, paving the way for decentralized finance (DeFi) applications within the Bitcoin ecosystem.

  1. Ether blob space to generate $1 billion in revenue

Ether’s Blob Space, a specialized data layer supporting its Layer 2 networks, is predicted to generate over $1 billion in fees by 2025. Increased adoption of L2s, technological improvements in rollups, and the emergence of enterprise-grade applications will drive this growth.

  1. DeFi to achieve new highs

The QualityStocks Company Corner

Clene Inc. (NASDAQ: CLNN)

The QualityStocks Daily Newsletter would like to spotlight Clene Inc. (NASDAQ: CLNN).

As an individual grows older, they experience continued loss of strength and skeletal muscle mass. Once an adult reaches 40, they start losing roughly 8% of their muscle mass every 10 years. By age 70, this often rises to 15% loss in muscle mass every 10 years. Muscle loss, commonly referred to as sarcopenia, is linked to a heightened risk of disability and mortality in the elderly. It causes frailty, which significantly reduces an individual's quality of life. While the main cause of sarcopenia isn't known, researchers posit that mitochondrial dysfunction could help explain its development. While no differences in perimeter or surface area were observed in the skeletal muscles of both young and old individuals, the researchers did observe increased mitochondrial volume in the skeletal muscle of older individuals. This, they noted, could indicate swelling. In their report, they explained that a drop in MFN2 protein levels was associated with structural changes in skeletal muscle mitochondria, contributing to muscle loss. For companies like Clene Inc. (NASDAQ: CLNN) that focus on coming up with biopharmaceutical solutions that enhance mitochondrial health, research findings of this nature present additional options that can be considered to realize company goals.

Clene Inc. (NASDAQ: CLNN) is a late clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on improving mitochondrial health and protecting neuronal function to treat neurodegenerative diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis (MS).

Its lead drug candidate is CNM-Au8®, an oral suspension developed to restore neuronal health and function by increasing energy production and utilization by driving critical cellular energy producing reactions that enable neuroprotection and remyelination to increase neuronal and glial resilience to disease-relevant stressors. CNM-Au8 is being studied in various clinical trials, including the Harvard/MGH Healey ALS Platform clinical trial for patients with ALS; RESCUE-ALS, a completed proof-of-concept clinical trial in patients with early symptomatic ALS; the REPAIR trials, completed target engagement clinical trials showing brain energy metabolite change with CNM-Au8; and a completed MS clinical trial for the treatment of visual pathway deficits in chronic optic neuropathy for remyelination in stable relapsing MS. The company also has a nanotherapeutic platform of drug discovery.

CNM-Au8

CNM-Au8, Clene’s lead asset, is a highly concentrated aqueous suspension of catalytically active, clean-surfaced, faceted gold nanocrystals. Multiple pathogenic insults contribute to neuronal death. Mitochondrial dysfunction and NAD+ decline is a common final pathway in neurodegeneration, with NAD+ as a critical determinant of cell survival and function. CNM-Au8’s catalytic mechanisms target the energetic deficits, oxidative stress and accumulation of misfolded proteins that are common to many neurodegenerative diseases.

The unique catalytic mechanism of action of CNM-Au8 is hypothesized to act as a neuroprotective and remyelinating therapy in neurodegenerative disease states in order to: (1) drive, support and maintain beneficial metabolic and energetic cellular reactions within diseased, stressed and/or damaged cells, (2) directly catalyze the reduction of harmful, reactive oxygen species (“ROS”) and (3) promote protein homeostasis via activation of the heat shock factor-1 pathway, recognized to dampen the cytotoxicity caused by misfolded and denatured proteins, which are known to occur ubiquitously in neurodegenerative diseases.

CNM-Au8 is used in combination with other agents, has no known drug-drug interactions, and is designed to improve function and survival. The clinical effects of both function and survival were seen in its clinical ALS trials, as earlier announced.

More than 500 estimated years of collective exposure across ALS, MS, and Parkinson’s disease participants in CNM-Au8 clinical trials and Expanded Access Protocol (compassionate use) programs have been recorded without any observed safety signals.

CNM-Au8 is a federally registered trademark of Clene Inc. Clene, based in Salt Lake City, Utah, with R&D and manufacturing operations in Maryland, began in 2013.

Market Opportunity

ALS is the most prevalent adult-onset progressive motor neuron disease, affecting approximately 30,000 people in the U.S. and an estimated 500,000 people worldwide, with a life expectancy of typically three to five years. Clene estimates that global ALS treatment sales will be greater than $1 billion annually within the coming few years. Additional treatments affecting daily function and survival remain the market need.

Additionally, there are more than 2 million MS patients globally, and Clene estimates the market size to be worth more than $23 billion annually. While the MS community has been successful at limiting relapses, non-relapsing MS patients continue to clinically deteriorate even while receiving effective immunomodulatory disease-modifying therapies (“DMTs”). A critical unmet medical need remains for therapeutic interventions that protect neuronal function and myelin health independent of immunomodulation to address progression independent of relapse activity.

Aston Bay Holdings Ltd. (TSX.V: BAY) (OTCQB: ATBHF)

The QualityStocks Daily Newsletter would like to spotlightFathom Aston Bay Holdings Ltd. (TSX.V: BAY) (OTCQB: ATBHF).

Jervois Global, a mining firm based in Australia that primarily produces cobalt, recently entered into a recapitalization agreement with alternative investment firm, Millstreet Capital Management. A significant drop in the price of cobalt has seen the firm enter bankruptcy proceedings in an effort to save itself and its workforce. Since hitting a new high in April 2022, the price of cobalt globally has dropped by over 70%. Jervois' recapitalization proposal will see it go private, receive $145 million in new capital and get delisted from the Australian Securities Exchange. The funding is expected to support the business and growth initiatives, including a cobalt-nickel refinery located in Brazil. It should be noted that the $15 million grant awarded to Jervois by the Pentagon earlier won't be impacted by the bankruptcy and will continue funding research on whether the company building a cobalt refinery in America is feasible. Other North American companies like Aston Bay Holdings Ltd. (TSX.V: BAY) (OTCQB: ATBHF) are making progress in developing cobalt-rich properties. Over time, this vital mineral could become readily available outside Chinese-controlled supply chains.

Aston Bay Holdings Ltd. (TSX.V: BAY) (OTCQB: ATBHF) is a publicly traded Canadian minerals exploration company focused on exploring high-grade copper and gold deposits in North America. The company owns the Storm Copper Project and the Seal Zinc Deposit in Nunavut, Canada, and is currently exploring the Buckingham Gold Vein and critical metals prospects in central Virginia. Aston Bay is also in the advanced stages of negotiation on other properties with high-grade critical minerals potential in these areas.

The company believes in responsible exploration and carries out its work programs to the highest standards of social responsibility, environmental stewardship and health and safety. Aston Bay cares about leaving a net positive impact on the communities in which it works and engages with local representatives, Indigenous groups and government agencies to build respectful relationships through dialogue and collaborative processes. Depending on the stage of exploration, these efforts may include employment, contracting, training, community benefits and other agreements.

Aston Bay conducts exploration through safe, socially and environmentally responsible and sustainable work practices. The company embeds core values of health and safety throughout its operations by adhering to strict health and safety standards and practices that meet and/or exceed industry standards and government codes and regulations.

The company is headquartered in Toronto.

Projects

Storm Copper

The high-grade Storm Copper Deposit is located 112 kilometers south of the community of Resolute Bay, Nunavut, on western Somerset Island, just south of the past-producing Polaris Pb-Zn Mine. The property comprises 173 contiguous mining claims, including the Storm Copper and Seal Zinc projects, covering an area of approximately 541,795 acres.

The property has good access to established shipping lanes, and the landscape provides favorable conditions for development of roads and a protected deep-water port. Exploration is supported through excellent infrastructure in the nearby hamlet of Resolute Bay.

Aston Bay is partnered with American West Metals (ASX: AW1) at Storm. American West is responsible for all exploration expenditures, having aggressively advanced the project toward production and earned an 80% interest. This affords excellent optionality to the company’s shareholders, as Aston Bay is free carried with no required expenditures until the completion of a bankable feasibility study.

American West recently completed an Australian JORC-compliant Maiden Resource Estimate for Storm; the North American 43-101 compliant resource estimate is expected in Q1 2024. American West is cashed up and plans a multimillion-dollar resource expansion and new discovery drilling program for the summer of 2024.

The Buckingham County Gold Project

The gold-bearing system at the Buckingham County Gold Project in Virginia lies within a belt hosting past producing mines, current gold mines and advanced gold explorations, stretching through Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.

Buckingham hosts a “Kirkland Lake-style” high grade gold vein returning values consistently over one ounce gold per ton and is underexplored both at depth and along almost one mile of strike length. These types of veins have excellent ESG qualities, as they are typically mined using a small footprint underground method, with gold extracted using simple and environmentally friendly gravity methods.

Market Opportunity

The World Gold Council, the industry association for the world’s gold producers, estimated in 2023 the physical financial gold market, which is made up of bars, coins, gold ETFs and central bank reserves, is worth nearly $5 trillion. The council reports that gold mine production adds approximately 3,500 tons of the precious metal to the world’s supply annually, equivalent to about 2% growth.

This historical scarcity and relatively slow production of new supply, as compared to other commodities, is a primary reason gold has retained its value for millennia, according to the council.

A report from Acumen Research and Consulting, a global provider of market intelligence and consulting services, valued the global copper market at $304.1 billion in 2022 and forecast that it will reach a market size of $496.8 billion by 2032, growing at a CAGR of 5.1% over the forecast period.

The report identifies a growing demand for copper in the electronics industry, as well as an expanding copper supply due to increasing production from existing mines and the rising number of mine development projects in developing nations, as driving factors in the rising value of the copper market.

Annovis Bio Inc. Overview

Annovis Bio Inc. (NYSE: ANVS) is a late-stage clinical drug platform company pioneering transformative therapies for neurodegenerative disorders such as AD and PD. Annovis Bio stands out by developing a drug that targets multiple neurotoxic proteins simultaneously, aiming to restore axonal and synaptic activity. This innovative approach addresses both the cognitive decline in AD and the motor dysfunction in PD, making Annovis a unique player in the neurodegeneration space.

Lead Drug Candidate: Buntanetap

Buntanetap (formerly known as Posiphen) targets neurodegeneration by inhibiting the formation of multiple neurotoxic proteins, including amyloid beta, tau, alpha-synuclein, and TDP43. This multifaceted inhibition improves synaptic transmission and axonal transport, reduces neuroinflammation, and protects nerve cells from dying. Unlike monoclonal antibody therapies, buntanetap is an orally available small molecule capable of inhibiting multiple neurotoxic proteins at once, positioning it as a comprehensive solution for neurodegenerative diseases.

In a recent Phase II/III Alzheimer’s study, buntanetap demonstrated statistically significant efficacy. Patients with early AD showed a significantly higher rate of improvement in ADAS-Cog 11 scores across all treatment doses compared to placebo, with a 3.3 point improvement compared to 0.3 for placebo (p < 0.01). Plasma Tau protein levels also reduced, consistent with previous Phase II biomarker data, further validating buntanetap’s mechanism of action.

Similarly, in the recently completed Phase III study of buntanetap in patients with early PD, buntanetap significantly improved disease-related daily non-motor and motor functions in Parkinson’s patients who had a diagnosis over 3 years as well as improved cognition in all PD patients. It further underscores buntanetap’s potential as a transformative therapy.

Market Opportunity

First Tellurium Corp. (CSE: FTEL) (OTCQB: FSTTF)

The QualityStocks Daily Newsletter would like to spotlight First Tellurium Corp. (CSE: FTEL) (OTCQB: FSTTF) .

With the European Union investing significantly in renewable energy technologies and green infrastructure, the regional bloc is relying on education to promote the EU Green Deal among Europeans. The human element will be key to accelerating the EU's transition from fossil fuels to renewables, particularly in terms of specialized labor. Many EU nations have hundreds of millions to billions of dollars' worth of green energy investments set aside, but have been held back by human resource shortages in key green energy-related fields. Furthermore, the ultimate success of the EU Green Deal will be dependent on EU citizens understanding and adopting new practices and technologies that promote clean energy. The EU's support could involve providing Education Ministries in member states with the technical and financial support they would need to enhance and adapt their educational frameworks. Educating younger generations on the importance of green energy, as well as the career opportunities available in the nascent sector, will ensure the industry has enough skilled workers to sustain it. Furthermore, education will ensure that residential and commercial consumers are aware of the benefits of green energy and integrate it into their daily activities as much as possible. As more people become educated about green energy, entities like First Tellurium Corp. (CSE: FTEL) (OTCQB: FSTTF) could benefit more by producing the needed green energy metals as the uptake of renewable energy accelerates not just in Europe but around the world.

First Tellurium Corp. (CSE: FTEL) (OTCQB: FSTTF) is committed to exploring for and providing essential and critical metals, including tellurium, gold, silver, copper and tungsten, for North American markets. This objective is anchored by the company’s Deer Horn tellurium-gold-silver-copper project in British Columbia, Canada, and further enhanced by its property option on the Klondike tellurium-gold prospect located in Colorado, USA.

First Tellurium’s unique business model is to generate revenue and value through mineral discovery, project development, project generation and cooperative access to untapped mineral regions in indigenous territory with sustainable exploration potential.

The company is headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Tellurium and the Green Energy Revolution

Tellurium has a key role to play in the ongoing green energy revolution. It is widely used in the manufacturing of photovoltaic cells for solar panels.

Despite this utility, ongoing trade tensions between China and the U.S. create implications for both tellurium and the production of cadmium-tellurium solar cells. Earlier this year, China announced plans to restrict exports of critical metals gallium and germanium, both essential for the production of semiconductors. For reference, China produces around 80% of the world’s gallium and approximately 60% of the world’s germanium.

China’s recent trade restrictions amplify the fragility of the North American tellurium supply, as the Asian nation currently produces about 60% of the world’s tellurium. This sustained supply vulnerability is why First Solar, the United States’ largest solar panel producer, set up a worldwide search for tellurium deposits in the mid-2000s.

“In North America alone, our understanding is that First Solar looked at over a hundred tellurium properties,” First Tellurium CEO Tyrone Docherty stated in a news release. “Their number one property by far, which they acquired, was the Colorado Klondike which we now control.”

The U.S. is now looking to secure safe, domestic sources of tellurium and many other critical metals to pre-empt potential shortages. The Biden administration has instituted a stream of policies, particularly the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act, to source solar components from North America and other “friendly” jurisdictions.

As the only junior mining company in the world focused on tellurium exploration, First Tellurium is ahead of the curve in capitalizing on these initiatives to establish strategic, domestic supplies of key resources for solar panel manufacturers.

First Tellurium’s ESG Initiatives

Through its exploration and partnerships with Fenix Advanced Materials, Cheona Metals and IRMA, First Tellurium strives to generate a measurable, beneficial social or environmental impact alongside a financial return. The company conducts a diversified search for metals, working in alliance with indigenous peoples, NGOs, governments and leading metals buyers. First Tellurium believes this is the future of mineral exploration — generating revenue by exploring responsibly and leveraging diverse partnerships.

First Tellurium proudly adheres to, and supports, the principles and rights set out in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and, in particular, the fundamental proposition of free, prior and informed consent.

Projects

Deer Horn Tellurium-Gold-Silver-Copper Project

Deer Horn is located on 51.33 square kilometers (km) in west-central British Columbia, 36 km south of the prolific Huckleberry copper-molybdenum mine and 135 km southwest of the community of Burns Lake. It is one of few significant tellurium discoveries outside Asia and includes a 2.4 km-long vein system of high-grade gold, silver and tellurium, as well as broader zones of bulk-tonnage gold, silver and tellurium mineralization. The company completed a positive Preliminary Economic Estimate and has begun permitting for a 10,000-tonne bulk sample program to advance the project toward mine feasibility. It is North America’s only silver-gold-tellurium property with an NI 43-101 compliant tellurium resource, and it hosts a number of other mineralized targets and zone containing critical metals such as copper, tungsten and zinc.

First Tellurium owns 50% of the property, with an option to acquire up to a 75% interest. The company has engaged Dias Geophysical of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, to conduct induced polarization (IP) geophysics on the Deer Horn Project in summer 2023. The program is designed to help develop drill targets for a subsequent drilling program.

Klondike Gold-Tellurium Project

The Klondike property is located in Saguache County, Colorado, southwest of Buena Vista in the state’s historical mining district. The company reports it has engaged Burgex Mining Consultants of Sandy, Utah, to stake additional claims around the Klondike property. The claims have been filed with the Bureau of Land Management.

Klondike demonstrates exceptional tellurium grades. Tellurium, used in high-efficiency cadmium telluride (Cd-Te) solar panels, next-generation lithium-ion batteries and thermoelectric devices to change heat into energy, is an essential element for the world’s transition to green energy.

The Klondike property was a top tellurium prospect owned previously by First Solar Inc., one of the world’s largest solar panel producers. First Solar terminated its worldwide raw materials exploration program in 2012 and sold the property to Colorado Klondike LLC, which optioned the project to First Tellurium. Colorado Klondike, led by First Solar’s former Exploration Manager in North America, is managing the upcoming exploration program.

The Colorado Geological Survey (CGS), in partnership with the Colorado School of Mines, reported on First Solar’s exploration at Klondike in 2015, noting: “Surface sampling by First Solar, Inc. in 2006 found very high tellurium grades of up to 3.3% (33,000 ppm), along with locally high gold grades. Tellurium grades at Klondike were the highest encountered in the company’s nationwide exploration program.”

Market Outlook

First Tellurium in spring 2023 referenced recent forecasts by the International Energy Agency (IEA) pointing to rapid growth in solar photovoltaic (solar PV) deployment worldwide. According to the agency, solar PV installations will generate more power by 2027 than any other energy source, including coal, natural gas and hydro. To meet this demand, consumption of both silver and tellurium, key components of solar panels, is expected to surge in coming years.

Chen Lin, founder of Lin Asset Management, has written in his investment newsletter for clients that solar PV is now the largest industrial usage of silver. He said that in 2022 solar PV production used about 12% of total silver demand, or about 120 million ounces of silver. Lin expects this number to rise dramatically in the coming years, and that is likely to lead to silver supply deficits for decades to come.

Lin points out that solar power is now the cheapest source of energy in many parts of the world and that all forecasts point to dramatic expansion of solar PV in the coming two decades. Conservative estimates forecast 300 gigawatts of solar PV production by 2027, up from the current level of about 200 gigawatts.

PaxMedica Inc. (NASDAQ: PXMD)

The QualityStocks Daily Newsletter would like to spotlight PaxMedica Inc. (NASDAQ: PXMD).

PaxMedica Inc. (NASDAQ: PXMD) is a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company focusing on the development of novel anti-purinergic therapies (APTs) for the treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other serious conditions with intractable neurologic symptoms.

The company’s lead programs are focused on ASD, for which there are currently no approved pharmacologic treatments that target its cause and symptoms. Currently used treatments only address the symptoms of the condition, rather than targeting the pathophysiology itself.

PaxMedica is on a promising path to address these unmet medical needs, bringing hope to millions. Anti-purinergic therapies target the excess production of purines in cells. An overexpression of purines can offset homeostasis and result in an overproduction of cellular adenosine triphosphate, the main energy molecule in all living cells.

The company is headquartered in Tarrytown, New York.

Product Pipeline

PaxMedica is building a robust pipeline of products targeting ASD and related neurodevelopmental conditions. The company’s lead product in development may help eliminate, reduce or modulate some of the more troublesome aspects of ASD. That would open the potential for people with autism to integrate their behavior with others more successfully and improve their lives.

PaxMedica’s lead programs, PAX-101 and PAX-102, utilize the company’s proprietary source of suramin sodium, a broadly acting anti-purinergic therapy that has been known for over 100 years. Its current pipeline includes:

  • PAX-101 (IV Suramin) for ASD – PAX-101 completed a Phase 2B study for ASD in 2021. Suramin is a broadly acting APT and has reported positive results from a dose range study. The results of PaxMedica’s Phase 2B study, which targeted 52 subjects across six sites in South Africa, were presented to AACAP in October 2021.
  • PAX-102 (Intranasal Suramin) – PaxMedica has developed a proprietary intranasal formulation of suramin that is currently being evaluated in ASD and other neurodevelopmental conditions.
  • PAX-101 for HAT – Given suramin’s historical use as a treatment for Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT), or African Sleeping Sickness, the company is also developing PAX-101 as a treatment for HAT. PaxMedica’s most advanced program is the pursuit of PAX-101 for early-stage East African HAT.
  • Selective APTs – PaxMedica has conducted several preclinical studies to evaluate other APTs that are more selective to specific purinergic receptors and may offer additional benefits over suramin.

Market Opportunity

According to a report by Fortune Business Insights, a leading global market research company, the global ASD therapeutics market was estimated at $1.93 billion in 2022 and is projected to grow from $2.01 billion in 2023 to $3.42 billion by 2030, a CAGR of 7.9% over the forecast period. As there is no current treatment for the core symptoms of autism, PaxMedica believes the addressable market for PAX-101, if approved, could greatly exceed these forecasts.

Autistic disorder, Asperger’s Syndrome and Pervasive Development Disorder are the three main types of ASD, affecting millions of people globally. A 2020 report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention estimated that one in 36 children in the U.S. have been diagnosed with autism disorder.

Several factors are expected to contribute to market growth prospects. A growing prevalence of the condition globally and rising awareness coupled with available treatment options are key factors expected to drive ASD therapeutics market growth during the forecast period. Growing investment in R&D to find effective treatments is also expected to fuel global market growth.

Platinum Group Metals Ltd. (TSX: PTM) (NYSE American: PLG)

The QualityStocks Daily Newsletter would like to spotlight Platinum Group Metals Ltd. (TSX: PTM) (NYSE American: PLG).

Platinum Group Metals Ltd. (NYSE American: PLG) (TSX: PTM) is the operator of the Waterberg Project, a bulk underground platinum group metals (PGM) deposit discovered by Platinum Group in 2011 and located on the Northern Limb of the Bushveld Complex in South Africa. The Waterberg Project is planned as a fully mechanised platinum, palladium, rhodium and gold mine, including by-product copper and nickel production, and is projected to be one of the largest and lowest cost PGM mines globally.

The project is a joint venture between Platinum Group; integrated PGM producer Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd. (OTCQX: IMPUY); Japanese consortium HJ Platinum, which includes trading house Hanwa Co. and the government-backed Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC); and local empowerment partner Mnombo Wethu Consultants (Pty) Ltd. Platinum Group has an effective 50.22% interest in the Waterberg Project.

The company’s primary business objective is to advance the Waterberg Project to a development and construction decision. An update to the 2019 Definite Feasibility Study is expected in 2024.

PGMs are essential and precious metals that include platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium, osmium and ruthenium. These metals are known for their purity, high melting points and unique catalytic properties. They are utilized in a number of industrial processes, technologies and commercial applications and play a critical role in autocatalysis and pollution control in the automotive sector. The bulk of global PGMs are mined in Southern Africa and Russia.

The unique properties of PGMs are being applied to various technologies as possible solutions for more efficient energy generation and storage, which may create new demand for PGMs. The company’s battery technology initiative through Lion Battery Technologies Inc., using platinum and palladium in lithium battery technologies, represents one such new opportunity in the high-profile lithium battery research and innovation field.

Platinum Group’s sole material mineral property, the Waterberg Project, is presently in process with pre-construction permitting; engineering work, including road upgrade and traffic studies; finalization of power and water infrastructure design; and construction camp design.

The company’s principal product from the Waterberg Project is planned to be a PGM-bearing concentrate. The concentrate will contain economic amounts of six elements comprising platinum, palladium, rhodium, gold, copper and nickel. The company’s partner in the Waterberg Project, Impala Platinum Holdings, has acquired a right of first refusal to enter into an offtake agreement, on commercial arm’s-length terms, for the smelting and refining of mineral products from the Waterberg Project.

The Waterberg project has proven and estimated reserves of 19.5 million ounces of PGMs and gold. When fully operational, the mine is projected to produce more than 400,000 ounces of PGMs annually during the peak period of steady state production. The life of the mine is projected at 45 years.

South Africa’s PGM mining sector remains closely tied to economic developments in the global automotive industry, which in 2022 accounted for approximately 43% of the total global demand for platinum and 82% of the total global demand for palladium.

Market Opportunity

According to a report from Straits Research, a global market and business research firm, the worldwide platinum market had an estimated value of $7.72 billion in 2022 and is projected to reach $11.95 billion by 2031. That represents a CAGR of 5.13% over the forecast period.

Platinum, one of the rarest of precious metals, is about 30 times scarcer than gold. It is crucial to the automotive and electronics industries and is also used to make jewelry. Stricter emissions regulations around the world have led to an increased demand for platinum to be used in catalytic converters to reduce automotive emission, the report states.

A report from Allied Market Research estimated the global palladium market at $16.3 billion in 2021 and projects the market will reach $28.6 billion by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 5.8% over the period.

Palladium is also used in automotive catalytic converters for reducing emissions and in jewelry, dentistry, watchmaking, blood sugar test strips, aircraft spark plugs, surgical instruments, electrical contacts and musical instruments.

An increase in demand for consumer electronics has driven demand for palladium-based multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC) used to store energy in electronic devices such as broadcasting equipment, mobile telephones, computers, electronic lighting and high voltage circuits, according to the report.
