A new study on cannabis grown in Colombia highlights the impressive variety of phytochemicals in the plants. The study identified four different chemotypes based on their cannabinoid profiles, revealing an abundance of uncommon terpenes.

The study’s results, which were published in the “Phytochemical Analysis” journal, indicate that the wide range of compounds found in Colombian marijuana could benefit both growers and the medical cannabis industry. Further, the findings demonstrate Colombia’s potential to be a leader in the global cannabis industry, particularly in South America, as new markets continue to develop.

The authors state that one reason for this diversity is Colombia’s varied environmental regions. The country is known for its array of landscapes, including snowy mountains, tropical coastlines, deserts, rainforests and grasslands. This environmental variety has already contributed to the success of other agricultural industries, such as coffee production.

Researchers collected 156 cannabis samples from 17 licensed medical cannabis cultivation sites, spanning 7 provinces and 5 regions of Colombia. Growers provided information about the types of plants used in the samples — local, imported or hybrids — as well as specifics regarding the growth conditions (indoor, outdoor or greenhouse).

Significant structural and color differences were evident in the samples even before any chemical testing was conducted. The study found that whereas some blooms were more open and airy, others were compact and dense. The samples’ colors ranged from bright, warm tones to softer, more subdued hues.

The research team divided the cannabis into four primary categories after examining the cannabinoids in each sample: type 1, which was dominant in THC; type 3, which was prominent in CBD; type 4, which was dominant in CBG; and type 2, which was balanced. Even though these kinds were distributed throughout Colombia, certain regional patterns did show up.

For instance, plants from the Coffee Triangle region had the highest concentrations of CBD-A, whereas cannabis from the Amazon and south-central regions had the highest THC-A levels. Additionally, the researchers found that cannabis from these same regions contained higher levels of certain compounds, such as CBDV, CBGA and THCV.

The authors also measured the levels of 23 distinct terpenes in the samples. THC-dominant strains showed the greatest variety of terpenes, while CBD-dominant and balanced strains had β-myrcene as the most common terpene. Some types also contained high levels of terpenes that are less common in North American cannabis, such as nerolidol and linalool. The study highlights that the observed diversity in these samples is likely due to a combination of genetic factors and the environment in which the plants were grown.

Interestingly, the research found that nearly one-half of the samples were local varieties, with most of the rest being hybrids of imported and local strains. Very few samples were purely imported. This suggests that Colombia’s long history of growing cannabis before legalization has influenced the country’s current medical cannabis market, with growers blending local and foreign cultivars.

The study provides the first detailed metabolic analysis of legally grown cannabis in Colombia, uncovering significant chemical diversity. The researchers believe that this diversity could contribute to new opportunities in medical cannabis worldwide. They recommend further studies that include full-genome sequencing and a deeper exploration of how environmental factors influence the chemical makeup of cannabis plants.

The bill will place hemp products under the watch of the Cannabis Regulatory Commission, which oversees the state’s medicinal and recreational cannabis markets.

Gov. Murphy stated that while the measure was flawed, he had concluded that the wiser move was to sign it so it would address the risk to health and safety then work with lawmakers to address the measure’s issues in a separate bill. Hemp is legal at the federal level, following the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill. However, a legal loophole has allowed products with intoxicating hemp products to proliferate the market.

Under this law signed by Murphy, retailers aren’t allowed to sell products with THC of any amount to an individual below 21 years of age. In the next 30 days, businesses will also have to take any hemp products off their shelves until new regulations regarding sales are implemented by the commission.

The measure, which was amended at the last minute, raised some concerns from those in the hemp and cannabis industries, mainly because it created confusion in how hemp products are defined. This language could either limit sales to hemp products made in the state or permit retailers to sell hemp products manufactured out-of-state without infracting the law.

Murphy explained that the former would violate the dormant commerce clause stipulated in the Constitution while the latter didn’t align with the measure’s objective by creating another loophole. Supporters of the measure applauded its signing into law, with Todd Johnson of the state’s Cannabis Trade Association noting that this would ensure consumer protection.

The law also permits businesses holding liquor licenses to sell hemp drinks, without imposing the strict standards imposed on marijuana stores.

Not all are happy with this change, however. Beau Huch, a lobbyist who represents hemp drink companies, explained that while the hemp industry had always wanted to limit access to these products by underage individuals, the new law doesn’t offer any tangible benefit to the marijuana industry.

Currently, more than one-half of municipalities in the state have banned marijuana businesses, with towns set to limit marijuana shops in their borders. Marijuana businesses also have additional requirements to meet, including site-approval plans, strict zoning and guards at doors checking IDs.

It isn’t clear whether these jurisdictions will permit these intoxicating products to be sold within their borders.

The Gochager Lake Project

The Gochager Lake Project in northern Saskatchewan, also in the prolific Trans Hudson Corridor, was recently expanded through the addition of the contiguous Watt’s Lake property and direct staking, bringing its total land area to 22,620 hectares.

The Gochager Lake property is host to a historic resource defined by drilling in 1966-1967 consisting of 4.2 M tons grading 0.29% Ni and 0.08% Cu. Recent drilling by Fathom has defined multiple very robust off-hole borehole electromagnetic (BHEM) responses in eight of nine holes drilled in 2023 and three historic drill holes probed. There is very strong evidence of multiple, high-grade nickel-copper-cobalt steeply oriented chutes within the historic Gochager Lake Deposit.

Prior to Fathom exploration in 2023 and since 1970, exploration at the property has been limited to small drill programs in 1989-1990 and 2018. Exploration plans for 2024 include expanded surface geophysical programs, drilling and continued BHEM surveys to expand tons and increase the grade of the historic Gochager Lake deposit. Summer exploration will consist of soil geochemistry, mapping, prospecting and additional surface geophysical programs focused on identifying other Gochager-like deposits within the current land package.

Emperor Metals Inc. (CSE: AUOZ) (FRA:9NH) (OTCQB: EMAUF) is an advanced stage gold exploration company focused on proving and developing the substantial resource potential of its flagship Duquesne West Gold Project located in the Tier 1 district of the Southern Abitibi Greenstone belt of Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec. The Project has a 2011 historical mineral resource estimate of 727,000 ounces of Au at 5.42 g/t and an average thickness of 5.71 m*.

In 2023, with the use of AI (Artificial Intelligence), Emperor Metals created the first ever 3D mineralized and geological model, which illuminated the potential to add significant ounces to this deposit. Using these models, Emperor’s had a very successful 2023 drilling campaign of 8,579 m. In addition to laterally extending high grade zones by intercepting grades of 15.8 g/t Au over 10.8 meters, Emperor encountered intercepts of lower grade bulk tonnage in the host rocks (1.69 g/t Au over 25 m). This led to envisioning a different strategy of exploration and the revelation that a conceptual open-pit potentially overlies this high-grade gold deposit. Historic core sampling began (2,500 m) for discovering overlooked lower grade gold in the host rock around the high-grade lenses. Lower grade bulk tonnage gold improves the open-pit economics by reducing stripping ratios and adding overlooked incremental ounces for open pit mining.

Emperor Metals is set to begin a fully funded Phase II 8,000 m drilling program in May 2024. The company also plans on assaying an additional 8,000 m of historic core within the open pit model. Emperor is working toward producing an updated NI 43-101 Mineral Resource Estimate by Q1 2025.

Project

Emperor Metals has an option to earn 100% ownership of the Duquesne West Gold Project, a mineral claim package comprising 38 claims covering approximately 1,389 ha (3,432 acres) in Quebec.

The Duquesne West Gold Property is located 32 kilometers northwest of the city of Rouyn-Noranda and 10 kilometers east of the town of Duparquet. The property lies within the historic Duparquet gold mining camp in the southern portion of the Abitibi Greenstone Belt in the Superior Province.

Emperor is targeting the potential multimillion-ounce resource in a combination of conceptual open pit and underground mining scenarios. A Phase I drill campaign and historical core sampling program was completed in 2023, which included resource confirmation and exploration drilling, focusing on delineating and growing the resource toward development.

The property hosts a historical inferred mineral resource estimate of 727,000 ounces of gold at a grade of 5.42 grams per ton (g/t) and average stope thickness of 5.71 m. The mineral resource estimate predates modern Canadian Institute of Mining guidelines, and a Qualified Person on behalf of Emperor Metals has not reviewed or verified the mineral resource estimate. Therefore, it is considered historical in nature and is reported solely to provide an indication of the magnitude of mineralization that could be present on the property. The gold system remains open for resource identification and expansion.

Reinterpretation of the existing geological model was created using artificial intelligence and machine learning. This AI model shows the opportunity for additional discovery of ounces by revealing gold trends unknown to previous workers and the potential to expand the resource along significant gold-endowed structural zones. Multiple scenarios exist to expand additional resources, which include:

  • Underground High-Grade Gold
  • Open Pit Bulk Tonnage Gold
  • Underground Bulk Tonnage Gold

The Duquesne West-Ottoman property straddles the Porcupine-Destor gold localizing fault several kilometers east of the town of Duparquet. A number of previous drill campaigns have outlined an inferred resource of 4.17 million tons grading 5.42 g/t of gold (cut) or 6.36 g/t (uncut), as reported in the NI 43-101 report titled “Technical Report and Mineral Resource Estimate Update for the Duquesne-Ottoman Property, Quebec, Canada.”

Emperor Metals is funded for an 8,000-meter drilling program focusing primarily on adding ounces to the current resource within and lateral to the open pit model. An additional 8,000 m of historical core sampling and assaying is included in the budget to help build incremental ounces in the open-pit environment.

Market Opportunity

The World Gold Council, the industry association for the world’s gold producers, estimated in 2023 the physical financial gold market, which is made up of bars, coins, gold ETFs and central bank reserves, to be worth nearly $5 trillion.

The council reports that gold mine production adds approximately 3,500 tons of the precious metal to the world’s supply annually, equivalent to about 2% growth. This historical scarcity and relatively slow production of new supply, as compared to other commodities, is a primary reason gold has retained its value for millennia, according to the council.

In May 2024, the market price of gold was approximately $2,340 per ounce.
